Newry Mitchels were visitors to Dunavil
for the opening match of the league
on Thursday when they met a home team
who produced a marvelous display of
attacking football to win 5-17 to
0-12. The first twenty minutes were
close enough but once Brian Rodgers
took a Declan Doyle pass to shoot
to the net, An Riocht went on to add
a further 1-5 before the break, James
Reilly fisting the second goal.
Mitchels had their moments on the
restart but found Stephen Doran in
the home goals in unbeatable form
while Kory Colgan and Declan Clarke
defended strongly in front of him.
Declan Doyle and Ronan McAlinden dominated
at midfield while the pick of an impressive

07/09/2009
Congratulations to the U16
footballers who won the South Down
B League with victory over Saval at
Dunavil on Sunday morning. In horrible
wintery conditions An Riocht showed
great heart and no little skill to
win by 1-12 to 1-10 and gain some
consolation for their unfortunate
FC defeat to these opponents. There
were stars in every line of the team.
Niall Murnion recovered from an early
goal to pull off a fantastic second
half save to prevent Saval taking
the lead. Ryan Clarke was commanding
at full back with Gareth O’Neill
picking up the rover and Ryan White
back to his tigerish best. Stephen
Curran controlled the play from centre
half with Aaron Higgins impassable
on the wing. Declan Doyle was very
strong at midfield and Ronan McAlinden
gave a player of the match display
alongside him, probably best remembered
for his five points but it was his
blocking and leadership which earned
him this accolade. Up front Stephan
Knox was seen to best effect on the
edge of the square while Declan Higgins
prospered in the final quarter hour
on the forty. Adam White created space
all match long while Aidan McVeigh
made it difficult for Saval to clear
their lines.
Though Ronan McAlinden gave An Riocht
an early lead it was Saval who were
in front most of the half after a
lucky goal in the fifth minute. Declan
Doyle, Aidan McVeigh and Declan Higgins
pulled points back
before An Riocht regained the lead
from a Ryan White penalty after Adam
White was dragged down with only the
keeper to beat. Further points from
Ronan McAlinden (3) Declan Higgins
and Declan Doyle helped An Riocht
to a 1-9 to 1-5 interval lead. After
Saval had pointed twice on the restart
Niall Murnion came off his line to
parry a goal bound shot and Ryan Clarke
took another dangerous ball off the
toe of an attacker. This spurred their
team mates to three second half scores
from Nathan McComiskey, Ronan McAlinden
and Stephan Knox which were enough
to keep them ahead for a thoroughly
deserved win.

U16
Football v Saval 24/08/2009
An Riocht played Saval in the B Championship
final at Newry on Saturday. After
a good start in which we led 1-2 to
nil, Ronan McAlinden at full forward
thriving on early ball to shrug off
his marker and race through to score,
An Riocht struggled to link defence
and attack and a better balanced Saval
side were level by the twenty fifth
minute but that was their third point
in a row and they went on to lead
by two before we got back on terms
by the end of the half, 1-6 to 0-9,
Aidan McVeigh and Declan Doyle the
scorers. An Riocht enjoyed the better
start to the second half with points
from Ronan McAlinden and a subdued
Declan Doyle putting us two up but
Saval replied to level and the game
remained in the balance until the
first of Savals three second half
goals arrived around the fortieth
minute when Turley rose to punch all
the way to the net past a static defence.
That goal gap had stretched to five
before they pounced for their second
goal after An Riocht had again floundered
under a high ball it was as good as
game over. The third goal came on
the final whistle and gave an unfair
look to the final score line, 3-16
to 1-10. An Riocht R McAlinden 1-6,
D Doyle 0-2, A McVeigh 0-1, R White
0-1.
16/08/2009*The
U16 footballers repeated their success
in Longstone with a good win in the
league.
09/08/2009*
In the U16 football championship in
Longstone, An Riocht recovered from
a shaky start to win convincingly.
Two nil down An Riocht got on the
score board with a Kevin Sloan goal
after good play from Adam White and
Ronan McAlinden. Ronan who was being
pulled and dragged all over the place
added four pointed frees after fouls
on himself before Declan Doyle advanced
to fist a cross to the net for a second
An Riocht goal. Full back Stefan Knox
pointed our first from play and following
a brilliant tackle by Declan Doyle,
Ronan McAlinden added his fifth point.
He converted another free before the
home side ended the half as they begun
it with two points, from frees, to
leave it An Riocht 2-7 Longstone 0-4
at the break.
Longstone got a great start to the
second half when their corner back
drilled to the net but further early
inroads into our lead were curtailed
by some brilliant defending by Aaron
Higgins (catch) and Ryan Clarke (block).
Midfielders Declan Doyle and Stephen
Curran replied with points apiece.
Still Longstone enjoyed a period midway
through the half with four scores
in a row to narrow the deficit to
nine points but An Riocht hit back
with points from James Reilly and
Ronan McAlinden before Ronan fired
in a cracking third goal to put the
result well beyond the home side.
He added the final point from way
out in the corner and though Longstone
never gave up and created a few late
chances the An Riocht defence held
firm to see out the match, final score
An Riocht 3-12 An Riocht 1-8.
Team N Murnion, A Donnelly, S Knox
0-1, A Higgins, G O’Neill, R
Clarke, E Phillips, S Curran 0-1,
D Doyle 1-1, K Sloan 1-0, R White,

gates opened on the restart with Declan
Doyle, Ronan McAlinden and Ryan White
claiming the pick of the scores.

for An Riocht but the scoring plaudits
were claimed by Andrew Magorrian (3-2)
who was guesting for the visitors.
U16 Football
v Ballyholland 31/05/2009
An Riocht edged a close contest 2-10
to 1-8. Declan Doyle leveled at two
all before Adam White took an inch
perfect Doyle pass in behind the defence
and placed his shot clear off the
keeper for the opening goal. Kevin
Sloan contributed a couple of good
long range points and Ronan McAlinden
and James Reilly converted frees apiece
as An Riocht went 1-6 to 0-4 ahead.
Then in added time Harps hit back
with a goal to leave just two points
between the teams. They shared four
frees on the restart with Declan Doyle
our scorer. Entering the final quarter
Ballyholland had a leveling goal disallowed
and within minutes Stephen Curran
had fisted our second at the other
end. Adam White and Declan Doyle tagged
on points as An Riocht pressed their
advantage opening a seven point gap.
Harps reduced it to five with a couple
of frees but despite lots of possession
they could not get on terms and An
Riocht held out for the win. Eoghan
Phillips and Gareth O’Neill
saw a lot of ball in the home defence
and made some important blocks while
Brian Rodgers and Adam White won lots
of the possession which became winning
scores. Team N Murnion, A Higgins,

2-14 to 1-13 against Ballymartin.
20/04/2009
U16 Football An Riocht 1-3 Bosco 0-9
Minus three key players An
Riocht almost did enough to shock
visiting Bosco at Dunavil on Wednesday.
The bigger Newry side dominated possession
but An Riocht only trailed three points
to one at the break. A well worked
goal in the second half brought the
home side level after James Reilly
found Adam White and his low cross
went all the way to Declan Higgins
who picked his spot wide of the keeper.
However An Riocht spurned a good chance
shortly after this and though the
scores remained level for a time it
was Bosco who finished strongest with
the points to win the match.

The U16 footballers came
up just short of taking something
from this keenly contested league
encounter, Ballymartin winning 2-11
to 0-14. The teams were level at half
time, 1-5 to 0-8, but the visitors
struck for their second goal just

battled gamely they could not get
on level terms. Ryan Donnelly (5)

U16 Football An Riocht v
St Colmans 06/05/2008
The U16 footballers failed
to record back to back victories when
they lost 3-12 to 2-8 to St. Colmans.
The west Down amalgamation were very
big and good value for the win. Aidan
McVeigh bagged both An Riocht goals
in a lively first half which the visitors
led 2-8 to 2-3. The second half was
more pedestrian with the result not
in any doubt.
U16 Football Atticall v An
Riocht 28/04/2008
Well done to the U16 footballers
who beat Atticall 5-10 to 2-7 in Tuesday’s
derby game. Goals from Aidan McVeigh,
James McCulla, Ronan McAlinden and
Declan Higgins helped An Riocht to
a 4-6 to 1-4 interval advantage and
Declan added a second on the restart.
James McCulla had a brilliant hour
at centre field and was well supported
by Ryan White and Ryan Donnelly.
U16 Football Ballymartin

hour but An Riocht could not complete
the recovery going down 3-5 to 2-12.

opening game of the league. First
half goals from Aidan McVeigh and

The
U16 footballers played Clonduff away,
losing 1:16 to 1:9. Paul Allen and
Michael Keenan did well at mid field
trying hard and never stopped. We
switched Michael Clarke and Stephen
Corr and both showed improved form.
Kevin Mathews did alright in goals
making one good save and varying the
kick out well. Diarmuid Flanagan was
strong scoring 1.6 including a fifty,
while Michael Speirs scored 0.2 and
Ashley Mc Loughlan scored 0.1 and
won a penalty. Paul Rooney won most
balls put into him. Conor Clarke came
on for Daryl Bowater and impressed.
Anthony Rogers came on for Michael
Harper and he won us three frees which
Diarmuid Flanagan scored. Stephen
Mc Veigh saw off four different men
with some brilliant defensive play.

Football 14/05/2007
The
U16 footballers played Atticall in
the Championship giving a better all
round team performance. The pick of
the backs were Declan White and Paul
Allen. All the backs tried hard. We
moved Stephen Corr into full back
and he tightened things up. Michael
Speirs did well at mid field scoring
1.4. Diarmuid Flanagan tried hard
scoring 0.2 but could have had more.
He was hasty on occasion .All the
subs came on with Paul Rooney having
hard luck when he fisted onto the
cross bar. The two best scores were
an Ethan Burns pointed fifty and a
long range free from Diarmuid Flanagan.
We had too many wides to win the game,
our shooting was poor. Man of the
match was Paul Allen. Team: Kevin
Mathews; Declan White, Michael Clarke,
Stephen Mc Veigh; Daryl Bowater, Paul

U16 Football 07/05/2007
The
U16 footballers played Clann Na Banna
at Dunavil and gave a much improved
display only going down by a goal,
1:11 to 2:11. Points from Diarmuid
Flanagan (free) and Michael Spiers
got us off to a good start but in
their first attack Clanns full forward
fired in a goal. Though they added
a point we were playing our best football
at this time and a great three man
move involving Ryan Donnelly and Michael
Spiers ended with Michael finding
Diarmuid in space and he rocketed
in a goal. The visitors keeper kept
them in it with two great saves in
as many minutes though we increased
our lead with points from Michael
and Diarmuid (3). A couple of frees
brought Bann within range and a twenty
third minute goal leveled the match.
The goal was particularly unfortunate
as Michael Clarke had expertly dispossessed
an attacker with the ball falling
to another Bann player and Kevin Mathews
doing well to save his effort but
again the ball fell to a forward and
he swept it to the net. Two further
frees had Bann ahead 2:6 to 1:7 at
the break. Christopher O’Rourke pulled
one back on the restart but three
third quarter points increased the
visitors lead. In a rare attack their
keeper again did well to scramble
away a chance with Diarmuids point
leaving a goal between the teams.
Bann stretched it to four before Christophers
second score signaled another burst
of An Riocht pressure but we failed
to make the most of enough chances
with only a Diarmuid Flanagan point
to show. Bann countered and Paul Allen
and Kevin Mathews defended strongly
with a late free again putting a goal
between them. We had one last chance
to salvage a draw but could not force
the equalizing goal we probably deserved.

The
U16 footballers lost heavily to a
very big and strong Tullylish / Aghaderg
/ St. Michaels combination. Early
saves from Kevin Mathews kept us in
it and Christopher O’Rourke sneaked
in a goal on ten minutes but thereafter
it was all Tullylish though Michael
Keenan did add a late point.

The
U16 footballers lost in Drumgath on
Tuesday 3:13 to 0:6. We had enough
of the ball to have done better but
lacked direction and played too many
cross field balls. Diarmuid Flanagan
was our only scorer. Kevin Mathews
in goals, Paul Allen at full back,
and Michael Clark in the first half
were our best players. All the subs
got a run. Team: K Mathews; M Donnelly,

The Down Vocational Schools U14 Final
took place at Dunavil on Tuesday
of last week. Well done to St. Columbans
on winning the down U16 Title.
U16 v Shamrocks
19/09/2006
The U16 footballers finished the
league with a win over Shamrocks to
secure runners up in Division One
of the South Down competition. In
a high scoring affair the result was
4:14 to 5:7. We were well on top in
the early stages and goals from Diarmuid
Flanagan (2) and Conor Cole helped
us to a 3:8 to 0:5 halftime lead.
Shamrocks hit two goals in quick succession
on the restart but a like score from
Brendan Allen looked to have restored
our control of the game. Then in the
last ten minutes the Newry boys banged
in three more goals and it took some
late points from Michael Spiers and
Darren Doyle to see us over the finish
line. Team A Rogers S Sloan S Corr

U16 v Saval
12/08/2006
Despite having suffered a recent
dip in form the U16 team won in Saval,
3:9 to 0:9, to maintain our challenge
for the league runners up spot. Michael
Clarke and Paul Allen were the pick
at the back while Wayne Bowater (1:1)
and Shane White (0:1) tried hard at
midfield. Up front the winning goals
came from Rory Cunningham and Diarmuid
Flanagan.
U15 Seven-A-Side 12/08/2006
At the Og Sport in Carryduff we
won our group beating Castlewellan
2:4 to 0:1 and Saval 2:5 to 2:0. In
the semi final we played Kilcoo and
at half time were winning 3:5 to 1:5.
However we missed a couple of chances
at the start of the second half and
Kilcoo won in the end 5:11 to 4:6.

U16 v Rostrevor
12/08/2006
Our two league victories counted
for nothing as Rostrevor took this
Championship encounter by 3:15 to
1:11. The visitors played with a strong
wind and used it to good effect leading
1:11 to 0:3 by the break. The breeze
died during the interval and we gained
no advantage from it on the restart
yet still edged the second half 1:8
to 2:4 but never looked like making
inroads into Reds big lead. Good luck
to them in the Semis. We must now
win our remaining league games Saval
(A) and Shamrocks (H) to secure the
runners-up spot. Hopefully all holiday
makers will have reported back fit
and ready by then. Team A Rogers;

U16 v Clonduff
30/07/2006
The U16 footballers edged a close
affair in Hilltown to remain in contention
in the league. We were very slow to
start but were still ahead by nine
points at the break after a good second
quarter, 4:6 to 0:9, and looking likely
winners. Clonduff hit back in the
second half and we suffered a few
anxious moments before the end finishing
just two points to the good, 5:12
to 2:19. Team: Anthony Rogers, Shane
Sloan, Stephen Corr, Daryl Bowater,
Paul Allen, Michael Clarke, Michael
Keenan, Wayne Bowater 0:1, Shane White,
Rory Cunningham 1:1, Diarmuid Flanagan
1:2, Michael Spiers 1:5, Conor Cole

U16 Football
v Rostrevor 04/07/2006
The U16 footballers turned in
a great display to beat Rostrevor
1:19 to 2:7 at Dunavil on Tuesday.
Though there were nine points in it
at the finish, throughout the match
the result could have gone either
way. That we got off to a better start
and then could always reply with a
series of points preventing Reds putting
two scores together went a long way
to securing this victory.
Rostrevors keeper
rivalled our midfielder Wayne Bowater
for the player of the match. He made
three first half saves to deny us
goals and after the break did even
better going full length to turn away
a penalty.
We were three nil
up when Ethan Burns released Diarmuid
Flanagan with a quickly taken free
and the big full forward drilled the
ball just inside the post for our
goal. Rostrevor goaled on twenty minutes
and could have had another but for
a great block by Shane White who then
popped up at the other end of the
field to point us further ahead. Michael
Spiers added the score of the half,
breaking a tackle at speed and shooting
on the run. Reds meanwhile tried to
finish the half on a high but a Stephen
Corr block and a Paddy Gartland tackle
kept them out at the last minute.
At half time we led 1:9 to 1:3.
Ethan Burns scored
two fifties in succession within five
minutes of the restart, quite a feat
to convert two in a row. When Diarmuid
Flanagans penalty was brilliantly
saved with a quarter hour still to
play Reds trailed by seven and a goal
narrowed the gap to four before a
strong finish to the game saw us shoot
five unanswered points. Team A Rogers

The U16 lost by nine points at
Milltown playing fields and now the
best we can hope for in the league
is a runners up spot. At half time
we trailed 3:8 to 1:5 and though we

we could not make any inroads into
their lead. Team A Rogers C Clarke

U16 Football
v Ballyholland 19/06/2006
In the third Championship match
of the day the U16 beat Ballyholland
4:10 to 3:9. We played against the
wind and trailed at the break 2:6
to 1:4, Rory Cunningham our goal scorer.
After Darren Doyle had lofted a great
point on the restart Wayne Bowater
banged in a goal and with Conor Cole
and Paddy Gartland adding further
goals we just about bested the home
side. Team A Rogers S Sloan S Corr

U16 Football
v Shamrocks 29/05/2006
The U16s lost in Newry 0:12 to
1:6 on a miserable wet night on which
the majority of games were rained
off. Minus midfield powerhouse Wayne
Bowater we were always going to find
the going hard though were right in
it at six four down at half time.
We had chances in the second half
including a penalty but failed to
make the most of them with Mark Mc
Kays goal coming too late to spark
a revival. Stephen Corr, Michael Spiers,
Shane White and Paul Allen wee the
pick on this occasion. Team E Burns;

U16 Football
v Saval 22/05/2006
We won this by 6:14 to 1:11 and
it was really our ability to create
goal chances which separated the teams
after a fairly evenly contested affair.
Wayne Bowater set the trend when he
netted from a free in the opening
minute. Saval came back well to trail
1:3 to 0:5 only to be rocked as Diarmuid
Flanagan goaled twice in a minute
midway through the half. Shane Sloan
and Ethan Burns both did well to deny
Saval any goals and Stephen Corr made
a particularly memorable high catch
from a fifty. Just before the break
Shane White broke forward from midfield
to score a cracking fourth goal and
at half time we led 4:8 to 0:6.
Conor Cole took
a brilliant goal on the restart and
though Saval grabbed their own goal
shortly afterwards, Diarmuid Flanagan
completed his hat trick after good
play from Conor Cole. Michael Spiers
was unlucky not to goal when he cut
through the Saval defence but was
fouled as about to shoot and the resultant
penalty flew over the bar. This victory
was built around a high flying performance
by Wayne Bowater at midfield. Team:

U16 Football
v Clonduff
15/05/2006
The U16 boys continue to
surprise themselves with a series
of unexpected results. Clonduff true
to the form guide started well and
led five two though we were getting
in on goals with remarkable ease.
After several decent chances were
spurned Diarmuid Flanagan finally
hit the back of the net on twenty
five minutes and Rory Cunningham added
another to put us 2:4 to 0:6 ahead
at the break. Conor Cole cleverly
stepped inside his man for a third
goal direct from the restart and a
strong solo run from Darren Doyle
created the opening for Diarmuid to
shoot his second as we led 4:8 to
0:8 by the fifty fifth minute. A late
rally saw Clonduff pull 1:2 back but
the final score fell to hard working
midfielder Wayne Bowater who pointed
with the last kick to leave it 4:9
to 1:10. Team: Ethan Burns; Daryl
Bowater, Stephen Corr, Michael Clarke;
Paul Allen, Shane Sloan, Declan White;
Shane White, Wayne Bowater 0:1; Paddy

U16 Football
v Rostrevor 30/04/2006
The U16 footballers won on their
second outing at Rostrevor finishing
thirteen points to the good, 7:10
to 4:6. However the game was a lot
closer than the final score line suggests.
We played very well in the first half
particularly Declan White and Daryl
Bowater on the full back line, Shane
White and Wayne Bowater at midfield,
and Conor Cole and Michael Spiers
in attack. At the break we led 3:6
to 1:5 and Reds came at us on the
restart scoring 2:1 to tie the match.
We settled again however and shot
four last quarter goals for a deserved
victory. Team E Burns D White M Clarke

the stronger visitors eventually stretched
clear to win 4:13 to 3:7. Ethan Burns
was good in goals and his kick outs
were a big help. Shane White and Paul

Football Mitchels v An Riocht 06/09/2005
The

we found Mitchels too big and powerful
and not bad players in the FC Final
on Saturday. Still coming from where
this team was two years ago these
players can feel their season was
a success.
