Down Senior Football Championship
Round 1:
An Riocht 0-09 Burren 0-05
An
Riocht played Burren in the
championship in atrocious conditions
in Clonduff on Sunday and produced
a tremendous team performance
to progress to the last eight.
An Riocht played with the gale
force wind and driving rain
on their backs and led eight
nil at the break. Ciaran Walsh
opened the scoring from play
and Martin Clarke added a free
before Michael Harper chipped
over a couple from distance.
Aidan Cunningham made it five
nil before John Clarke weighed
in with three points and Aidan
Flanagan got inside the defence
but his shot was cleared off
the line just before the break.
Burren struggled to find their
range as the whole An Riocht
team harried and hustled them
on the restart and forty one
minutes had passed before they
pointed from a free. They added
two more frees but could make
little headway against An Riochts
disciplined defending. Finally
in added time Burren registered
twice on the scoreboard from
play but An Riocht worked the
ball upfield for Martin Clarke
to cut inside, score the final
point and secure a significant
victory.
It would be impossible to single
out any player so complete was
the collective effort of all
eighteen players used.
