Taken From the Mourne Observer
The Kingdom,
fielding a young team, gained their
first success over Mayobridgein
four years. Although the 'Bridge
did miss a significant number of
scoring chances, An Riocht gave
a good account of themselves and
were worthy winners. In a series
of attacks led by John Clarke, Michael
Harper and Damian Cunningham, An
Riocht stretched the 'Bridge defence
in the first half. Benny Coulter
stopped a certain goal from Cunningham
when he made a super catch under
the crossbar.
At the other end
Brendan McVeigh did splendidly in
saving from Robbie Coulter. The
Kingdom were in front by 0 -6 to
0 -5 at halftime. Mayobridge introduced
Mickey Linden but their scoring
rate failed to improve. This was
due to intelligent defending by
Joe and Liam McVeigh, Jim Clarke
and Declan Rooney. An alert interception
by Damian Cunningham set Barry Annett
up for the point that gave An Riocht
a three -point lead. Mayobridge
threw everything at the Kingdom
backs during a hectic last seven
minutes. Two Ronan Sexton points
from frees were insufficient to
deprive An Riocht of a fine victory.
Liam McVeigh,
Jim and John Clarke and Michael
Harper were best for the winners.
Brian Sloan did an excellent job
as a defender in the closing stage.
The 'Bridge's most impressive players
were Brendan Grant, Noel Sexton,
Benny Coulter, Glen McMahon and
Ronan Sexton.
