At the recent BT
Ulster Colleges Winning Captains Presentations,
St. Louis captain Martin Clarke was
honoured by being selected as the
'captain amongst captains'. At the
second annual awards ceremony held
in the Ramada Hotel in Belfast, Frank
McManus, Head of BT Broadband, announced
that the winner of this new award
was someone who had displayed exceptional
leadership in contributing to his
team winning an Ulster Colleges Championship
title over the last twelve months.
He announced to the 300 plus audience
made up of winning captains of Ulster
Colleges Football and hurling competitions,
that the An Riocht clubman was to
be the recipient of the first ever
award as he had scored an amazing
one goal and seventeen points, as
St. Louis Grammar School, Kilkeel
beat La Salle Secondary School, Belfast
in last years Treanor Cup final.
The Kilkeel delegation, made up of
Martin's parents Thomas and Eileen,
his coach and his Principal, cheered
on with pride as Martin was interviewed
by television sports-presenter, Jerome
Quinn.
Far from being overawed
by the surprise, Martin spoke with
great maturity and eloquence as he
acknowledged the important role of
the efforts of his team-mates both
in winning the competition and in
the award bestowed upon him on the
night. Jerome finished by acknowledging
that he will probably be reporting
about Martin in the years to come
as he lines out, with his brother
John, in the red and black of Down.
