* There was a good turn out for the meeting of those intending to play senior football in 2008 and with a few new faces keen to break through there’s little danger of complacency among the league winning players. They meet again on Tuesday 8th January with training getting underway on Sunday 13th January. Anyone interested who missed last Fridays get-together should come along on the eighth. 11/12/2007

The Seniors beat Kilcoo in the League Final under the Newry lights on Friday and created history bringing the first of the two major trophies in Down to Dunavil.

Ireland and Down triple All Ireland winning boss Peter Mc Grath has worked the oracle at humble An Riocht delivering the Mourne club both the Division Two and Division One League Titles in an eleven month period of unparalleled success. Mind you he will be the first to acknowledge the contribution of returned Aussie Rules star Martin Clarke to his home club in terms of boosted morale, score making and score taking over the past month.

An Riocht certainly went the hard way about securing this first ever League Title. Trailing three one, then ten five and with star forward John Clarke harshly red carded just before the break the champions produced a second half display of courage and guile to stun the favourites and bring the cup home to Mourne.

Kilcoo were the more purposeful side at the start. Marty McClean burst through to take a Conor Laverty pass and score their first point. An Riocht replied with Martin Clarke pointing after a strong solo from James Cunningham but it was Kilcoo who were enjoying the better of the early exchanges and finding space inside the Mourne defence though Sean Kelly and Gary McEvoy both opted to point when faced with the imposing figure of county keeper Brendan McVeigh in the An Riocht goals.

Then eight minutes in An Riocht struck for their first goal. Martin Clarke was the architect with a good pass to John Clarke and he squared the ball to Chris Killen who carried it in and placed a great shot wide off Emmett Devlin in the Magpies goals. The Clarkes combined again for John to hoist over a point and An Riocht were right back in the match.

Conor Laverty leveled with two points in quick succession and after An Riocht had spurned a goal chance at the other end Kilcoos number six Aidan Branagan advanced to restore their lead. Laverty fisted another and then in the twenty fifth minute Laverty finally engineered a goal. Once more free inside, this time he held the ball up and jinking bided his time for support to arrive in the shape of Paul Devlin who with Mc Veigh drawn to Laverty had the simplest of tasks to finish Lavertys fist pass to the gaping net.

Paddy Cole fired over from distance and John Clarke rode a hefty challenge for another pointed response to leave a goal between the teams.
From that score Clarke saw red for an indiscretion signaled by the umpire and An Riocht went in with fourteen men.

At the break Pete McGrath switched Martin Clarke to full forward and Kilcoos extra man doubled marked him thus making no constructive contribution to the Magpies cause.

An Riocht restarted with Chris Killen taking a Martin Clarke pass to point. Then in the thirty fifth minute the roof almost came off the stand when Clarke goaled to put his team ahead. The move began near the dugouts with Paul Sherry dispossessing a Kilcoo attacker and releasing Paddy Cole down the line, he then slipped the ball inside to substitute Kieran McVeigh and he helped it on over the top where clever Clarke with two defenders hanging off him and the keeper racing out to crunch him deftly slid the ball along the greasy grass to the net. Neil Doran added a pointed free and a three point deficit had become two point advantage.

Kilcoo made a couple of changes to try and get back into the match but the next chance fell to the leaders when Emmett Devlin fumbled and Kieran McVeigh arrived just too late to force the loose leather to the net.

Paul Devlin from a free and a brilliant long range effort leveled the match for the fifteen men with ten minutes to go. An Riocht defended deep sometimes only Clarke was in the Kilcoo half and the Magpies could not find a way through the congested An Riocht half of the field. The vital next score fell to An Riocht with Clarke attracting defenders before slipping the ball to James Cunningham who pointed the Mourne men ahead with seven minutes remaining.

Momentum fully restored An Riocht swept forward again, Clarke still received the attention of three Kilcoo defenders leaving space for others to build a promising attack. Paddy Cole took possession just over the halfway line and in one movement looked up and placed a perfect pass into the hands of Clarke who shrugged off his marker, took a stride forward and lobbed the advancing keeper for a goal quite magnificent in its simplicity, creation and execution.

With four added minutes flashing on the fourth officials board An Riocht defended strongly and hit on the break. Sean Kelly did register a late free but this was only Kilcoos third score of the second half and nowhere near enough to see off the determined challenge of the fourteen men. Indeed it was An Riocht in possession and on the attack when the referee brought proceedings to a close.

The Seniors beat newly crowned county champions Mayobridge, 0-18 to 0-9, in the Division One semi-final in Newcastle under lights on Thursday. Mayobridge were short two of their championship team and it took a really great display to knock them out of the playoffs. An Riocht formed a guard of honour for Mayobridge coming onto the field but once the first whistle blew we set about dismantling their challenge. Early scores from twin attacking threats John Clarke and Paddy Cole got us off to a good start and when John Quinn converted a fifth minute free, Martin Clarke replied in kind. Robbie Coulter from play and placed ball then edged the Bridge in front for the first and only time in the match about midway through the half. Rampaging half back Joe McVeigh responded with a point and Neill Doran leveled before John Clarke fisted us into a lead never surrendered. Liam McVeigh and John Clarke added further points before John Quinn left a goal in it in the twenty third minute. That goal almost arrived for us when Paddy Cole got inside the Bridge defence but pulled his shot narrowly wide of the advancing Sean Fetherstone. Neil Doran and Martin Clarke made up for the miss with points apiece but in added time Noel Sexton and John Quinn cancelled these scores to leave three points in it at the break. The introduction of Benny Coulter at halftime should have rallied his side but after a couple of early chances came to nothing, they suffered something of a collapse while James Colgan continued to dominate at midfield. John Clarke and James Cunningham pointed at the other end. Even when Mickey Linden came on the Bridge struggled to find the spark to ignite a revival. Martin Clarke electrified the big crowd with a tremendous burst of speed and a shot that crashed off the inside of the post and away to the wing where Chris Killen collected and swung over possibly the best point of the night. Neil Doran, from a free and a fifty, put us eight clear at the three quarter mark and man of the match John Clarke and substitute Kieran McVeigh put ten points between the teams with ten minutes to play. Mayobridge had their moments but found our half back line of Joe and Liam McVeigh and team captain Deaglan O’Reilly in magnificent form and when they did get in the full backs defended with great discipline giving away few frees. Robbie Coulter and sub Barry Garvey pulled back late consolation points before Kieran McVeigh rounded off the scoring with our eighteenth point. Team & scorers Brendan McVeigh; Paul Sherry, Aidan Flanagan, Fergal Doyle; Joe McVeigh 0-1, Liam McVeigh 0-1, Deaglan O’Reilly; James Colgan, James Cunningham 0-1; Neil Doran 0-4, Martin Clarke 0-2, Chris Killen 0-1; Paddy Cole 0-1, John Clarke 0-5, Noel McArdle. Subs Michael Trainor, Kieran McVeigh 0-2.
Fridays final against Kilcoo will be the biggest game for An Riocht since our Senior Championship appearance in 1984.

The Seniors play Mayobridge in the Division One Title semi-final in Newcastle under lights on Tuesday 16th October. In our last league match coincidentally in the ‘Bridge on Saturday all the squad members got a start leaving a pretty formidable bench including eight who started in Burren last week. The home side led 2-7 to nil at the break before our introduction of five subs made a match of it and it finished 2-13 to 0-7. Team: B Mc Veigh; P Sherry, F Doyle, M Rodgers; D Sherry, M Trainor, C Doyle; A Flanagan, M Harper; N Doran, K Mc Veigh, L Fitzpatrick; L Harper, Jim Clarke, N Mc Ardle. Subs used John Clarke, J Colgan, P Cole, L Mc Veigh, J Mc Veigh.

Senior Football 24/09/2007

The Seniors won in Burren on Saturday by a point but really it should have been much more convincing. Burren started strongly with County captain Declan Rooney bursting through from midfield for two points. Neill Doran pulled one back and then in a move begun on our own line with a high Brendan Mc Veigh catch John Clarke finished from distance to level the match. Burren then regained the lead with Eamon Mc Govern volleying from twenty yards past a diving Mc Veigh. The goal had been coming and Rooney added a point with a rising shot. Noel Mc Ardle, from play and a free, then Neill Doran took us to within a point before Kevin Mc Kernan soloed in to point in what was by now an end to end affair. John Clarke with a huge kick responded and Liam Mc Veigh advanced from half back for the equalliser. Conaill Mc Govern restored Burrens lead only for Clarke to level within minutes with his third score of the evening. James Cunningham put us back in front before two Clarke frees, the second from all of sixty yards, gave us a three point advantage, 0-11 to 1-5, at the break. Michael Trainor, Joe Mc Veigh and Deaglan O’Reilly had been first half heroes in defence while James Colgan had gradually gotten on top at midfield, and up front John Clarke was the ablest of target men though perhaps a little too isolated.

Half time changes saw Aidan Flanagan drop back to the square and with Fergal Doyle and Paul Sherry complete a dominant full back line. Kieran Mc Veigh came on for his first game since injury and performed very well. The lead had stretched to five points when we were off target from a penalty and several other point chances went abegging and these misses kept Burren in the match. By the fifty ninth minute we were 0-16 to 1-7 ahead when Burren finally repeated their early form. Substitute Kevin Mc Givern poached a goal and another replacement James Mc Govern notched three points as the home side drew level and it seemed we would throw away all our previous good work. Then six minutes into added time Deaglan O’Reilly broke up a Burren attack, the ball went long up the line to Paddy Cole who cut across the defender and was bundled over. With the last kick John Clarke fired the winning point and we were in the Title playoffs for the first time since 1997. Well done to all concerned. Burren also make the Top Four along with Kilcoo and Mayobridge.

The Seniors played at Kilmacud on Saturday winning three out of four games. We beat Ardkee from Laois with Ross Munnelly included by 2-7 to 1-9, then the hosts Crokes on a 0-10 to 0-5 score line and St Joes the Louth champions by 5-7 to 1-0. This set up a quarter final elimination meeting with St Galls who beat us 2-4 to 1-5 with a late penalty goal. Squad B Mc Veigh, J Mc Veigh, L Mc Veigh, J Clarke, J Colgan, J Cunningham, A Flanagan, P Sherry, D O’Reilly, F Doyle.
The away league games v Burren and Mayobridge will take place on 22nd and 29th September.

Senior Football 03/09/2007
The Seniors played Castlewellan at Dunavil on Friday and came away with the win that makes us safe and with an outside chance of Top Four. We played with the wind and led from the first score which arrived in the third minute from the prolific Paddy Cole after John Clarkes shot had come back off a post. Cole added a second making the angle to pop over and James Colgan had An Riocht three up in the sixth minute finishing a one two with John Clarke. Neill Doran placed James Cunningham for our fourth after twelve minutes play but there was a noticeable slowing down of our scoring as the visitors began to come to terms with the match. Greg Mc Cartan got Town on the scoreboard from a fifteenth minute free and Damian Mc Grady took an Aidan Burns pass for their second. Paddy almost goaled with a cheeky lob over Mickey Mc Veigh but the back peddling County keeper tipped the dipping shot over the bar. Mc Grady came short to take a Burns free and point on the turn as Castlewellan brought the deficit down to two points. The only goal of the game arrived in the twenty fifth minute in a move began by John Clarke who played the ball ahead of Michael Trainor who squared to Paddy Cole and he planted the ball under the advancing Mc Veigh. Moments later Paddy was in again but hurried his shot and the chance was gone. Burns soloed in at the other end for a quick reply but our twin attackers, Clarke and Cole, added points apiece before the break for a 1-7 to 0-4 interval lead.
Castlewellan made the most of the breeze on the restart shooting five third quarter points through Mc Cartan (free), Mc Grady, Cathal Crilly (2) and Burns as the home lead tumbled to a solitary point. Neill Doran eventually converted a free in the fiftieth minute but seven minutes later Liam Mc Kibben replied for the visitors. On the hour John Clarke fielded an Aidan Flanagan fifty in the square and offloaded to Neill who fisted a point. Three minutes into added time Ciaran Mc Cabe made it a one point game but time had run out on the visitors.
The away games v Burren and Mayobridge will take place on 22nd and 29th September.

Senior Football 27/08/2007
The Seniors had no game as the match in Burren was postponed for the third time. The next match is home to Castlewellan on 31st August while the away games v Burren and Mayobridge have still to be arranged.

Senior Football 20/08/2007
On Friday the Seniors played very well in Newcastle to deservedly beat Bryansford, 1-1- to 0-11. The home side had the breeze on their backs in the first half though struggled to get scores such was the tigerish tackling of our defence epitomized by a brilliant block by Paul Sherry to deny Ciaran Branagan a goal in the fifteenth minute. Indeed at that stage we actually led two one, though a series of converted frees by Ciaran and Chris Branagan gave Ford an eight six lead after an exciting score laden second quarter. We had a goal chance also when James Cunninghams low drive beat Peter Travers on his near side but came back off the base of the post and was scrambled away. Bryansford scored first on the restart but the telling score came in the fortieth minute when Neill Doran was pulled down in the square but picked himself up to blast a penalty goal. Though we added three quick points we should have at least doubled this tally, too many shots falling narrowly wide of the posts. Ten minutes from time Brendan Mc Veigh saved at the feet of Conor Gribben to keep the home side out and begin a length of the field move which ended with Jim Clarkes fisted effort cleared off the line at the other end. With two points in it Ford threw everyone forward but again our defence was resolute and the danger passed. In a good team display the performances of Brendan Mc Veigh, Aidan Flanagan, James Cunningham, Chris Killen and Paddy Cole were especially note worthy. Team: B Mc Veigh; P Sherry, A Flanagan, L Mc Veigh; D O’Reilly, F Doyle, J Mc Veigh; J Cunningham 0-2, J Colgan; C Killen 0-1, N Doran 1-3, L Fitzpatrick; P Cole 0-3, John Clarke 0-1, L Harper. Subs Jim Clarke, M Trainor. The next match is home to Castlewellan on 31st August while the away games v Burren and Mayobridge have still to be arranged.

Senior Football An Riocht v Castlewellan 13/08/2007
In keeping with tradition we reserved one of our poorest performances of the season for the Championship. We never scored from play in the first half while Castlewellan had seven different scorers as they led 1.10 to 0.3 at the break. Our big support deserved better. Things improved on the restart and we almost accomplished the great escape going down 1.15 to 1.10. Paddy Cole was again outstanding in attack.

Senior Football An Riocht v Loughinisland 06/08/2007
An Riocht gained two vital league points in this delayed fixture on Sunday evening on a 2-10 to 0-10 score line. With John Clarke a selfless target man and early delivery the order of the day we ran the visitors ragged in the first half. Though he scored only a single point himself, Clarke’s ball winning capabilities and clever off loads caused the Blues defence all sorts of problems and even double marking him could not limit his influence. That’s not to say this was a one man team for it was not. Fergal Doyle saw of a succession of giants at full back while Joe Mc Veigh swept up the loose ball. The midfield of James Colgan and Aidan Flanagan bested the visitors pairing of Gordon and Stranney and sent the ball in early where Clarke dominated proceedings with good support from Paddy Cole and Liam Fitzpatrick.

An Riocht raced into a three nil lead by the fifth minute. Clarke won the ball top of the left and picked out Flanagan with a superb cross field pass and he opened the scoring. Cole was next on the score sheet and then a huge Neill Doran shot from outside the fifty sailed over for number three. A Ryan Stranney free failed to inspire Island and further points at the other end from Doran (2), Cole, Flanagan and Clarke moved us eight one ahead. Ben O’Reilly popped up with a twenty third minute free but the next score was the first of our two goals. Flanagan played in Fitzpatrick who crossed to Cole and back to Fitzpatrick who squeezed the ball inside the unguarded post. James Cuningham brought the half to a close with a point to leave it 1.9 to 0.2.

Christopher Killen came on for us while Stephen Molloy came on for them. O’Reilly pointed a free quickly answered by Cunningham but the visitors backed by the breeze went on to shoot six successive points between the thirty sixth and fiftieth minutes through Stranney (2), O’Reilly (2), Gordon and Mc Carthy. Clarke was now operating around the half forward line and when we got the ball inside we were no longer getting the return we had enjoyed in the first half. Then Fitzpatrick and Cole combined up the right and with space to exploit picked out Cunningham who drilled a low shot just inside the post for our second goal. Valentine replied in added time but we finished six points to the good.

Senior Football An Riocht v Mayobridge 06/08/2007
Mayobridge began their Championship preparations in scintillating style with a demolition of An Riocht in Mondays league fixture. On the back of two wins we were in form but had no answer to the power and pace of the Bridge who moved through the gears as required. At three apiece Noel Sexton pounced for the first goal. With just two between them Robbie Coulter fisted the second and the visitors led 2.7 to 0.6 at the break. We had our moments but were weak in the tackle and indecisive in possession. Ten minutes into the restart Benny and Robbie Coulter played a double one two before Benny walked the ball into the net. Almost immediately Liam Mc Veigh advanced from defence to goal for An Riocht and five minutes later Paddy Cole angled in a cracker but there was still time for Benny to crash home the visitors fourth for a double scores victory. Scorers P Cole 1.0 L Mc Veigh 1.0 N Doran 0.4 J Clarke 0.2 J Cunningham 0.1.

Senior Football An Riocht 2-07 Mayobridge 4-14

Senior Football 31/07/2007
An Riocht 1.13 Atticall 1.10
The result was all important though we hoped this victory would put paid to a recent slump that has seen us slide down the table. An early goal from Liam Harper got the match off to a bright start. Though never getting on top around midfield we seemed able to score at will with John Clarke and Paddy Cole sharing six spectacular first half scores. Atticall refused to be shaken off and at the break they trailed by three, 1.8 to 1.5. On the restart it was score for score with Clarke, Cole, and James Colgan getting the points as we stumbled over the winning line. Conor and Liam Mc Veigh held the defence together with Neill Doran, Jim Clarke and Chris Killen dropping deep to begin attacks and Paddy Cole and John Clarke thriving on good early delivery up front. Scorers An Riocht J Clarke 0.4, P Cole 0.4, L Harper 1.0, J Colgan 0.2, A Flanagan 0.1, J Cunningham 0.1, N Doran 0.1.

Senior Football 31/07/2007

Castlewellan 1.9 An Riocht 0.16
In Castlewellan on Friday An Riocht continued in good form. Despite conceding a goal to a soft penalty award in the third minute we came from five one down after fifteen minutes to go in level at the break. Castlewellan fired the ball about with precision at the start and when Cathal Crilly stumbled under a tackle while bearing down on goals the home side had won a penalty expertly dispatched by Kevin Duffin. The same player advanced to convert a free and though James Colgan replied with a like score the first score from play courtesy of Tony McAtamney left Castlewellan 1.2 to 0.1 to the good. However they failed to score again in the half. James Cunningham doubled our tally when he disposed a defender on the way out and Paddy Cole fired over two more points before Neill Doran leveled off a free in the twenty seventh minute.
On the restart we continued where we had left off. Backed by the breeze Neill Doran swung over three long range points. Paddy Cole put us four up and crashed another effort off the post. At the other end Crilly angled over a response but John Clarke had come on for us and as well as dominating possession from the kick outs he soon scored twice with James Colgan adding a free. Castlewellan hit three in a row from Ciaran Mc Cabe, Dean Anderson and Greg Mc Cartan but their rally was interrupted by points from Chris Killen and Paddy Cole after a move brilliant in its simplicity. Brendan Mc Veighs kick out again landed on John Clarke who flicked the ball onto Chris Killen who immediately put Paddy Cole in behind the defence with an inch perfect pass and Paddy had time to compose himself and kick the point. Mc Cartan hit two frees for Castlewellan but Paddy now operating on the edge of the square rounded off the scoring with a pair of points to leave four in it at the final whistle. Team B Mc Veigh; C Mc Veigh, J Mc Veigh, F Doyle; D O’Reilly, L Mc Veigh, L Fitzpatrick; N Doran 0.4, A Flanagan; P Cole 0.6, J Colgan 0.2, P Sherry; J Cunningham 0.1, Jim Clarke, L Harper. Subs John Clarke 0.2, D Sherry, M Harper, C Killen 0.1.

Senior Football 09/07/2007
The Seniors played Rostrevor in foggy conditions at Dunavil. We started quite well shooting three great long range points but then began to take too much out of the ball, losing it in the tackle and allowing Rostrevor hit us on the break, one of their strengths. This week again decent goal chances were spurned, three at least, and a two point defeat (0.10 to 1.9) shows the significance of those misses. Scorers N Doran 0.4, P Cole 0.3, L Harper 0.1, L Fitzpatrick 0.1, F Doyle 0.1. There will be a lot of improvement required over the holiday break in readiness for the second half of the league and the Championship.

Senior Football 02/07/2007
The Senior footballers lost in Longstone on Friday night, 0.13 to 3.11. Despite giving away a soft goal in the first minute we dominated the first half but trailed at the break 0.6 to 1.6 having shot ten wides to Longstones three. Kieran Mc Veigh had hard luck when he fisted over the advancing keeper but into the side netting. Liam Harper got clear but missed the target, and Paddy Coles rising shot flew just the wrong side of the bar. We began the second half with great purpose racing through for two points in as many minutes but in their first attack Longstone seized on a loose clearance to force a save from Brendan Mc Veigh with the ball ricocheting to Mark Poland who scuffed it over the line. We hit four wides in a row in response before Kieran Mc Veigh pointed from way out on the left but again Longstone replied with a goal. Ambrose Rogers strode through the middle of our defence leaving a clearly hobbling James Colgan in his wake before sending a well placed low shot wide off the keeper and into the bottom corner. 0.9 to 3.6 behind with twenty minutes remaining we never looked like making up the deficit and the home side got stronger in what time was left. That’s two losses in a row making it important we take something from Thursdays visit from Rostrevor. Best wishes to Kieran Mc Veigh for a full and speedy recovery from the serious facial injury sustained in an off the ball assault.

Team: B Mc Veigh; M Rodgers, L Mc Veigh, C Mc Veigh; D O’Reilly, F Doyle, L Fitzpatrick; A Flanagan, J Colgan 0.2 (1f); P Cole 0.2, P Sherry 0.2, N Doran 0.4 (4f); L Harper 0.1, K Mc Veigh 0.2, J Cunningham.

Senior Football 24/06/2007
The Senior footballers lost to Kilcoo, 1.19 to 1.10, on Friday. The visitors gave a near perfect display of pacy direct football with superb support play and an inventive attack brilliantly led by Anthony Devlin. To our boys credit they never gave up and though playing catch up from an early stage we pressed to the finish without really threatening to repeat the draw secured at Eoin Roe Park in the first meeting. Kilcoo led 1.4 to 1.1 after fifteen minutes, John Clarke netting our goal after a great move begun by Conor Mc Veigh and added to by Paddy Cole. However the visitors accelerated away in the second quarter to lead 1.10 to 1.2 at the break. The second half was equally end to end though we improved the return on our possession but not enough to make inroads to the Kilcoo lead. Team B Mc Veigh; C Mc Veigh, F Doyle, M Rodgers; L Fitzpatrick, Jim Clarke, D O’Reilly; J Colgan, A Flanagan 0.2; P Cole, N Doran 0.4, P Sherry 0.1; L Harper, John Clarke 1.3, K Mc Veigh.

ACTION FROM AN RIOCHT v CLONDUFF

Senior Football 18/06/2007
The Senior footballers played Clonduff on the worse night so far for football this season and despite a below par performance came away with the points. After Paddy Cole had opened the scoring the teams were level on four first half occasions with the home side leading by the minimum, five points to four, at the break. It continued in similar fashion on the restart, only this half An Riocht finished the stronger with the final two scores for a ten nine victory. Two point blank Brendan Mc Veigh saves were probably the difference between the teams. Elsewhere Michael Rodgers and Liam Mc Veigh were the pick of the defence, Aidan Flanagan the better midfielder, and Paddy Cole and Paul Sherry our hardest working forwards though the switch of Neil Doran and John Clarke enhanced both players performances. This was a great win even if the display was not. Team B Mc Veigh; C Mc Veigh, L Mc Veigh, M Rodgers; D O’Reilly, F Doyle, L Fitzpatrick; A Flanagan (2), J Colgan; P Cole (2), P Sherry (1), John Clarke (2); L Harper (1), Jim Clarke, N Doran (2). Subs C Killen, M Trainor.

ACTION FROM SENIORS V BURREN

Senior Football 11/06/2007
The Senior footballers played Burren on Friday past and while a draw was a good enough result in that it ended a run of defeats and also kept Burren below us in the table, there was still a feeling we had let a win slip from our grasp. Ahead by four points with six minutes to play we should have held on. Paddy Cole and Neil Doran (2) got us off to a flyer and in general we dominated the first half but should have led by more than eight points to four at the break. Immediately after the break we should have wrapped up the result but again failed to transfer our superiority onto the scoreboard. Burren mainly through free kicks just about kept in touch and a late flurry saw them level at thirteen points apiece. Scorers An Riocht P Cole 5, N Doran 3 (2f), F Doyle 2, P Sherry 1, A Flanagan 1, Jim Clarke 1. Burren K Mc Givern 9 (8f), PJ Mc Alinden 2, C Murdock 1, E Mc Govern 1.

Senior Football 05/06/2007
The Senior footballers played Liatroim, losing by a point 1:8 to 0:12. Fontenoys just edged a thoroughly entertaining first match on their newly refurbished pitch. A difficult diagonal breeze was of little help to the teams and it was our team who enjoyed the best play of the first quarter. After Aidan Flanagan had converted a fifty, a close in free was despatched by Michael Harper for two nil. A Colin Mc Crickard free was answered by a Paddy Cole point though with us spurning two good goal chances the home side had gotten on level terms by the fifteenth minute. We were counter attacking in waves and Aidan Flanagan and Kieran Mc Veigh pointed before Noel Mc Ardle finished a five man move with a tap in at the far post. However with Mc Crickard to the fore Liatroim dominated the second quarter pointing five times without reply for a 1:5 to 0:8 interval score line. The teams were level at nine, then ten all before Liatroim edged into a two point lead by the fifty third minute with An Riocht replying with our first score in some fourteen minutes but try as we might we could not get the equaliser, hindered no doubt by our eleven wides to their five. For An Riocht this was a heartening display by a young and inexperienced team. A good overall team performance was over shadowed by Ruairi Doran making a solid debut between the posts with some excellent handling while in front of him the full back line of Conor Mc Veigh, Fergal Doyle and Michael Rodgers were impeccable. Team R Doran; C Mc Veigh, F Doyle, M Rodgers; P Sherry, D O’Reilly, L Fitzpatrick; J Colgan, A Flanagan 0:2; M Trainor, K Mc Veigh 0:1, P Cole 0:2; L Harper, M Harper 0:1, N Mc Ardle 1:1. Subs C Killen 0:1, S Annett.

Senior Football 29/05/2007
The Senior footballers played Loughinisland away on Friday and lost for the second time in eight outings. Resources were stretched pretty thin with half the first choice team missing for a variety of reasons but for all that we made the home side work for their win. Five three down midway through the first half we conceded two goals in as many minutes in a free scoring first half. By the break we were 0:9 to 2:7 behind. The second half was a strange affair with the scoring dried up; they added five points to our two, and we had two good goal chances come to nothing. John Clarke had a brilliant first half kicking five points from play, while substitutes Liam Harper and Gary Cunningham showed well in attack. Team B Mc Veigh; C Mc Veigh, D O’Reilly, M Rodgers; P Sherry, L Fitzpatrick, M Trainor; J Colgan 0:1, K Mc Veigh; R Annett, J Clarke 0:6, N Doran 0:2; P Cole 0:1, M Harper 0:1, N Mc Ardle. Subs L Harper, C Doyle, G Cunningham, B Sloan.

Senior Football 22/05/2007
The Senior footballers played Bryansford at Dunavil on Friday and showed great spirit to win again in difficult circumstances. A treacherous diagonal cross field wind proved of little advantage to either team but we started the better. After a couple of early wides, Neill Doran fired over a huge point from way out near the half way line and added a second after a more patient build up. Conor Gribben replied for the visitors in the seventh minute and with points hard to come by, five minutes later Chris Branagan leveled. Neill Doran and Branagan exchanged frees before Branagan lofted over a lead point for the Ford. Given the possession we had enjoyed we should not have been behind. Michael Harper almost got in for a goal. A double dummy opened the Bryansford defence and with only the keeper to beat he fired a shot across the goals which only just escaped the inside of the far post. Then five minutes to half time Liam Mc Veigh limped out of the match. Noel Mc Ardle came on with James Cunningham dropping back to defence.

On the restart Neill Doran leveled with a free and then expertly curled in another to put us back in front. Paddy Cole soloed through for a memorable score and Neill forced Peter Travers to touch over a dangerous shot for our fourth point in a row which put us three clear. At the other end Brendan Mc Veigh plucked a Joe Ireland shot from above the bar but again we had begun to miss chances to put the game beyond Bryansford. In the fiftieth minute Branagan pointed from top of the left, then a minute later added a free. Five minutes from time Gribben leveled and it looked like we had let another one slip away but from the kick out the ball made its way to James Colgan and despite failing from an earlier free, he had the confidence to go for it and from all of fifty yards into the breeze he swung over the winning score. Bryansford did have a late chance to draw but solid defensive play denied them. On Monday the Senior footballers match in Mayobridge was postponed.

Senior Football 14/05/2007
The Senior footballers played Atticall away on a wet dark Friday evening and after a gritty performance came away with both league points. Once again Brendan Mc Veigh, James Colgan and Neill Doran provided on field leadership and the other players are responding in greater numbers each week. Paul Sherry had a stormer in defence while Paddy Cole in attack improved greatly after the break. This was always going to be a difficult game, made doubly so by absentees due to suspension, injury and county duty. Atticall needed the result to kick start their season and in the first half gave as good as they got. However after the break An Riocht looked comfortable and the win was never in any real doubt.

Neil Doran opened the scoring with a free but the home side were soon ahead through Louis and Miceal Sloan. Michael Harper took a quick free from James Colgan and angled over the equalliser. James Colgan pointed us ahead but Mark Doran leveled for Atticall and as they enjoyed their best spell Gary Morgan and Martin Trainor added further points. They almost goaled when Oliver Sloan out fielded Liam Mc Veigh and raced goalwards, but Brendan Mc Veigh turned away the shot. Just before the break Kieran Mc Veigh left the minimum between the teams.

On the restart Fergal Doyles timely interception prevented an Atticall goal chance and at the other end Neill Doran tied the match for the fourth time. Miceal Sloan fired over a reply but this proved Atticalls last score until added time. In between times Paddy Cole pointed two classics, the second one after a mazy solo run, and Neil Doran converted two long frees. An Riocht have become difficult to beat in this position and despite not running up any great tally of points they defend stubbornly and frustrate the opposition. Best Wishes to Jim who broke his wrist during the match. Team B Mc Veigh; F Doyle, L Mc Veigh, P Sherry; D O’Reilly, Jim Clarke, L Fitzpatrick; J Colgan 0:1, A Flanagan; N Doran 0:4, K Mc Veigh 0:1, R Annett; J Cunningham, M Harper 0:1, P Cole 0:2.

Senior Football 07/05/2007
The Senior footballers beat Rostrevor. Two goals in our first two attacks set An Riocht up for our first win of the season. Aidan Cole had already opened the scoring for Reds when Michael Harper punched in the first goal after a bout of volleyball in the box. Lloyd Parr hit back with a free but with scores scarce a quarter hour had gone when Harper released James Cunningham and he tipped the ball over the advancing keeper for goal number two. The same player added a point and the deficit was definitely significant. Joe Fegan soloed in for a good point and Lloyd Parr converted a free off an upright as Reds rampaged down the right wing. However they found our defence resolute and the next score actually fell to Neill Doran. Rostrevor replied with Lloyd Parr doing well to keep the ball in before pointing and the final score came off a Jim Clarke solo, finished over the bar by Richard Annett.

Rostrevor scored the first three points of the second half, subs Adrian Mackin and Martin Doran marking their introduction with points apiece and another Parr free left the minimum between the teams. Michael Harper angled over an important point for An Riocht and Neil Doran put a goal in it with the best point of the day. Parr cancelled that with a difficult free but Neil Dorans long range effort kept us ahead. When Parr struck over his fourth free in the fiftieth minute it proved the last score of the game. Reds dominated possession as An Riocht withdrew into our own half but even five additional minutes were not enough to yield another score. In the sixty fourth minute a quite brilliant diving block from James Colgan denied Lloyd Parr what would have been a winning goal. In a poor quality game the result was all. The midfield generalship of James Colgan stood out. Neill Doran was again our best attacker, while the positional switch of Jim Clarke and Liam Mc Veigh delivered each his best game to date.

Senior Football 30/04/2007
The Senior footballers drew with Kilcoo on Monday 3:9 apiece then on Friday Longstone inflicted our first defeat.

At Owen Roe Park we shared the spoils in a six goal thriller. We were slow to get going at the back early on and poor judgement allowed Kilcoo to open a two point lead. In a preview of how the game would develop we hit back with a goal. Neill Dorans fifty was fisted on by John Clarke and James Colgan arrived at the back post to hammer the ball to the net. It was a short lived lead as Anthony Devlin forced a fine save from Brendan Mc Veigh only for the ball to fall kindly for Dominic Mc Avoy who volleyed in a Kilcoo goal. Neill and John worked hard to claw back points but on twenty minutes we gave away another soft goal as Devlins dummy left defenders flat footed and he finished with a powerful shot to the roof of the net. Showing great resilience we shot four points in a row from Neil (2), John and a free from James to go level at 1:6 to 2:3. Again however it was a short respite as a simple ball over the top let Devlin in for another goal and with the last kick of the half Lavery added a free. Half Time Kilcoo 3:4 An Riocht 1:6. Kilcoo extended their lead on the restart and though we had chances we were trying for goals too soon into the half and the gap widened rather than narrowed. Despite points from James Colgan (0:2) and Kieran Mc Veigh we trailed by two goals with five minutes remaining. Then at last a pass and move play came off and John Clarke drilled low to the net. Kilcoo went up the field but Joe Mc Veigh won back possession and six passes later there was John to drive home his second goal. Late chances for both sides came to nothing and our third draw from three games resulted.

At Dunavil on Friday we faced into the first of three games without John Clarke as the ‘starred’ system kicked in and how we missed his presence in attack. In a poor game any forward worth his salt would have won the game for either side, as Mark Poland 0:8 and Kieran Doran 0:4 did for Longstone. Only Neill Doran of our attackers managed to score a point, actually he got four as did James Colgan who again gave a great display at midfield. Paddy Cole scrambled a goal but too often we squandered decent possession with wayward shooting and loose hands conspiring to ensure we were not going to reach a winning tally. Twice we had the deficit cut to two points but our cause was not helped by playing out the final quarter a man down. Team: B Mc Veigh; P Sherry, J Mc Veigh, Jim Clarke; D O’Reilly, L Mc Veigh, F Doyle; A Flanagan, J Colgan; N Doran, K Mc Veigh, J Cunningham; R Annett, P Murney, P Cole.

Senior Football v Clonduff 24/04/2007
The Senior footballers drew with Clonduff on Friday 0:16 to 1:13. After Brendan Mc Veigh had dived full length to turn away an early Clonduff effort we really ran the first half but failed to show our superiority on the scoreboard. Clonduff scored a fisted goal after a free had come off the top of the post to keep in touch at 0:9 to 1:4 at the break. The second half followed a similar trend until the final ten minutes when Clonduff scored three points in a row to hit the front for the first time, perhaps we did not work hard enough when not in possession. We were not to be undone however and Neill Doran equalized. Liam Mc Veigh then crashed a shot off the post and Clonduff went up the field to go back in front. In further added time James Colgan scored his fourth point and tied the game with the last kick. It was probably a fair result. Last week added time cost us a point, this week it rescued one. Though we dominated possession we continue to not reflect that with scores and are therefore always catchable in close games. Joe Mc Veigh and Liam Mc Veigh; James Colgan; Neill Doran and John Clarke were best over the hour.
 Team B Mc Veigh; P Sherry Jim Clarke J Mc Veigh; D O’Reilly, L Mc Veigh 0:1, F Doyle; A Flanagan 0:2, J Colgan 0:4; N Doran 0:3, K Mc Veigh 0:1, John Clarke 0:3; J Cunningham, P Murney P Cole 0:2.

Senior Football 16/04/2007
The Senior footballers played Liatroim in our first game back in Division One. It took us a while to get to terms with the pace and power of the visitors and Brendan Mc Veigh kept us in the game during this time, a penalty save one of several top class stops. As the game went on we improved greatly and but for some narrow wides we could have won it. From two nil up we went five two behind only to level at five, six and seven apiece before Kieran Mc Veigh pointed us ahead just on half time, 0:8 to 0:7. We were much tighter at the back on the restart and were level again on two occasions before points from John Clarke and Paddy Cole opened what looked like a winning gap, 0:11 to 0:9. Then twice we lost possession within scoring range and twice Liatroim put together length of the field moves to salvage a draw in added time. Team B Mc Veigh; P Sherry Jim Clarke J Mc Veigh; D O’Reilly, L Mc Veigh, F Doyle 0:1; A Flanagan, J Colgan 0:3; N Doran 0:1, K Mc Veigh 0:2, John Clarke 0:2; J Cunningham, P Murney R Annett 0:1. Subs P Cole 0:1, S Clarke. The match v Burren on Monday evening was postponed.

Senior Football 09/04/2007
The Seniors played Warrenpoint at Moygannon in a challenge game and came away with a four point win, 2:11 to 1:10. Kieran Mc Veigh got through for two early goals and John Clarke added several points. At the break we led 2:5 to 0:7. Team Brendan Mc Veigh; Paul Sherry Jim Clarke Joe Mc Veigh; Deaglan O’Reilly Liam Mc Veigh Fergal Doyle; Paul Murney, Michael Harper; Neill Doran, Kieran Mc Veigh John Clarke; Paddy Cole, Sean Clarke, Richard Annett. Subs Aidan Flanagan, James Colgan, Brian Sloan, Damian Sherry, Conor Mc Veigh, Michael Rodgers, Noel Mc Ardle, Michael Trainor.

Senior Football 02/04/2007
The Seniors had Silverbridge as visitors. The Armagh side was certainly up for the game and took some good first half points with long passing into shoot on sight forwards paying dividends for them. We were slower in our build up but still got enough scores to be level on five occasions before edging into a seven five interval lead. Though Silverbridge scored first on the restart we responded with the only goal of the game, Paul Murney taking a reverse pass from Paddy Cole to shoot low to the net. The second half was a dogged affair with committed play from both sides limiting time on the ball. Eventually Kieran Mc Veigh added two points, then Fergal Doyle picked off the point of the game and Aidan Flanagan with a long range effort left us 1:11 to 0:6 clear with eight minutes to play. Silverbridge finished in the ascendancy with four unanswered scores to leave the final score 1:11 to 0:10. Team Brendan Mc Veigh; Conor Mc Veigh Jim Clarke Joe Mc Veigh; Deaglan O’Reilly Liam Mc Veigh Michael Trainor; Neill Doran 0:1 Aidan Flanagan 0:3; Fergal Doyle 0:2 Kieran Mc Veigh 0:3 James Cunningham; Paddy Cole Paul Murney 1:1Richard Annett 0:1. Subs Brian Sloan Damian Sherry Paul Sherry Sean Clarke Michael Rodgers Noel Mc Ardle.

Senior Football 28/03/2007
The Seniors traveled to Downpatrick and came away victors by 3:6 to 0:5. Team B Mc Veigh; C Mc Veigh J Clarke J Mc Veigh; D O’Reilly L Mc Veigh L Fitzpatrick; P Murney A Flanagan; F Doyle K Mc Veigh J Cunningham; P Cole R Annett P Sherry.

Senior Football 20/03/2007
The Seniors traveled to Saval in atrocious weather conditions on Sunday morning, their first venture onto the field of play since the Playoff Final. On Savals impressive new pitch both teams deserve credit for their efforts though the driving snow did get the better of them for long periods in the game. Saval led four points to three at half time and finished six five to the good. The only goal chance during the hour fell to Sean Clarke but his low drive was deflected off a post and away. Even making allowances for the conditions the management will be concerned at the inability of the forwards to take the ball first time.

Team B Mc Veigh; C Mc Veigh J Clarke J Mc Veigh; D O’Reilly L Mc Veigh M Trainor; P Murney A Flanagan; F Doyle K Mc Veigh J Cunningham 0:1; P Cole 0:1 S Clarke N Mc Ardle 0:2. Subs G Small D Sherry 0:1 P Sherry.
