Senior Playoff Report

An Riocht 2:10 Ballyholland 0:8

The seniors gave a great display against Ballyholland at Ballymartin on Sunday winning our first playoff game but it was too little for us to rescue our first division status. Playing with the strong wind An Riocht scored at will in the first half and at the break we were 1:8 to 0:2 ahead. Points from Martin Clarke (4), John Clarke (2) and Richard Annett (2) were added to by a Liam McVeigh goal. Harps attempts were few and far between and Ronan Murtagh scored seven of their eight points including both first half scores. An Riocht played sensible football in the first half lofting over points at almost every opportunity. As the second half progressed we actually increased our lead with points from Neil Doran and Martin Clarke before Richard Annett crashed in a second goal. At 2:10 to 0:4, news of the other score came through and the game finished on a rather subdued note. Still lack of success does not lessen the time and effort put in during the year and our thanks to those who put it in.

Senior Football Playoff Report 01/11/2005
Burren completed the double on Sunday reversing earlier league and championship scores to win by two points, 0:13 to 1:8. Again the wind was a telling factor with Burren leading 0:11 to 1:1 at the break. We rallied well in the second half and twice were within a point of taking something from the match but two late frees edged Burren over the winning line. So our fate is now out of our own hands. We must beat Ballyholland and hope Shamrocks beat Burren to force further playoffs. Any other combination of results relegates us.

Senior Playoff Report 24/10/2005
This completed a depressing weekend and its win or bust this Sunday against fellow under achievers Burren. Report elsewhere.

DIV. 1 PLAYOFF Shamrocks 1:9 An Riocht 0:10 24/10/2005

Div. One Playoff Burren 0:13 An Riocht 1:8

Burren played with the wind and were good value for a first quarter five nil lead. Their points coming from Eoin McCartan, Aidan McGivern, Daniel McCartan and Kevin McGivern (2).

Then Liam McVeigh carried the ball a long way for An Riochts opener and moments later they had a penalty, after a rebound off the bar had caused panic in the Burren square, ably despatched by Neill Doran.

Burren hit back with Kevin McKernan impressive around midfield pointing twice. An Riocht did not help themselves as they persisted with big kick outs which were not going any real distance and which they were not winning.

Burren pressed their advantage and Eoin McCartan, Kevin McGivern and Aidan McGivern (2) extended their lead to 0:11 to 1:1 by the break.

It was all An Riocht on the restart. Paddy Cole (3), Neill Doran (2) and John Clarke left one in it with six minutes to play.

Then Eoin McCartan converted a relieving free only for John Clarke to make it a minimum margin again. Clarke fluffed his next free and the chance to tie the game and Burren broke up the left for substitute Glenn McMahon to put two between them with the last kick from a close in free.

Senior footballers 03/10/2005
In Kilcoo the Senior footballers lost 1:16 to 0:10. A very poor first half left us wit a mountain to climb in the second. Three points from John Clarke on the restart had us almost there but a clumsily conceded penalty undid the good work and Kilcoo were   always able to pick off enough scores to keep comfortably clear.

Senior Football v Castlewellan  22/09/2005
This was not a great game but it provided the win which has looked so elusive since the Championship. An Riocht were never behind though the teams were level on four occasions, three times in a tense mistake ridden first half. Again we struggled with our scores which allowed the visitors stay in touch. The highlights of the first half were a John Clarke point after good play by Liam McVeigh, a Johnny McBurney save from Ciaran McCabe, and a Tony McAtamney fisted point after a feint left our defender for dead. At the break the teams were level, 0:4 apiece. Points from Liam McVeigh and Paddy Cole put us two up on the restart but by the fortieth minute it was six all. We slotted over two more in quick succession around the fiftieth minute and Mickey McVeigh caught two above the bar. With three minutes to play Castlewellan made it eight seven and the game could have gone either way. Johnny McBurney advanced to deny Marty McKibben and from his save the ball swept up field for Paddy Cole to point. From the kick out Richard Annett added another and then Paddy Cole placed him for a goal with the last kick of the match. Final score 1:10 to 0:7. Team J McBurney J McVeigh A Flanagan D O’Reilly M Trainor 0:1 J Clarke 0:1 L Fitzpatrick L McVeigh 0:2 B Sloan P Cole 0:3 S Flanagan N Doran K McVeigh R Annett 1:2 C Walsh 0:1. Sub M Harper.

Senior Football v Warrenpoint  13/09/2005
The Seniors lost a high scoring challenge game 3:11 to 1:16 on Sunday morning. After a slow start we hit back to level at 0:7 to 1:4 at the break. Though our goal leveled on the restart the visitors struck for two quick goals of their own. It was level on forty five minutes, 1:12 to 3:6 and with five minutes to go at 1:15 to 3:9, before Warrenpoint nicked it at the finish.  Team J McBurney; L Fitzpatrick A Flanagan P Sherry; J McVeigh D O’Reilly M Trainor; B Sloan 0:1 L McVeigh; M Harper 0:3 N Doran 0:5 P Cole 0:5; K McVeigh S Flanagan 1:1 R Annett 0:1. Subs B McVeigh A O’Hanlon C Sloan J Clarke C Flanagan.

Senior Football An Riocht v Mayobridge  06/09/2005
All the old failings returned to produce a disastrous showing at Burren. Johnny McBurney in goals was our best player and that really tells it all. Conor Walsh did well when introduced. Ciaran Walsh late goal was greeted by silence.

Senior Football An Riocht v Kilcoo  06/09/2005
Briefly it looked like there would be no Championship hangover and we led 1:6 to 0:7 at half time, Kieran McVeigh goaling. However Kilcoo went in front on the restart and we went a man down and there followed a procession of scores for the visitors. Even a late Martin Clarke goal failed to mask the magnitude of the defeat with Kilcoo replying with the three later points. That’s
5:39 conceded in our last two games and the keepers have been faultless.

Seniors An Riocht v Ballyholland 22/08/2005
The Seniors secured two more points in their quest for the play-offs with a nine points to seven win over Ballyholland. Overall we dominated possession but failed to put Harps away due to too many misses from play and from frees and the fact that for long periods our defence had no long outlet as the half forwards were very deep into our own half. Every ball had to be played out and inevitably some went astray, though Paul Murneys second half point came from text book short forward passing. Indeed it was an attacker back in our own square whose clumsy tackle gave the visitors a seventeenth minute penalty which thankfully Johnny McBurney saved. At that stage the score was a low two points apiece but a better finish to the half saw us lead seven three at the break.

Ballyholland had the breeze on the restart but our defence which has come into its own in recent games repelled them. We were eight four up with ten minutes to play when Harps strung together three points to leave the minimum in it. That would previously have been a signal for us to lose but we responded with a Paddy Cole point to secure the win. Team: J McBurney J McVeigh A Flanagan L Fitzpatrick D O’Reilly L McVeigh 0:1 Conor Walsh B Sloan 0:1 P Murney 0:1 P Cole 0:3 A Cunningham N Doran 0:3 C McVeigh S Flanagan R Annett. Subs Ciaran Walsh M Harper J Cunningham K Flanagan.

The next match is the Championship quarter final on Wednesday 31st August v Mayobridge in Burren followed by Kilcoo at Dunavil in the league on Saturday 3rd September.

Senior Burren v An Riocht 15/08/2005
The seniors gave a mighty performance in the Championship to beat Burren 1:13 to 1:12. We were the better team but a nervous start and finish to the hour allowed our opponents keep in touch. Burren outscored us 0:4 to 0:1 in the first five minutes and 1:4 to 0:1 in the final five minutes, so for the fifty minutes in between which made up the bulk of the game we outscored them 1:11 to 0:4 which was a fair reflection on the play.

Seniors An Riocht v Clonduff

The Seniors lost this vital match by 1:11 to 3:11 yet with three minutes to play were only two points in arrears, 1:11 to 2:10, and had the momentum with them. This after a disastrous opening in which John Fegan and Shane Ward created havoc as Clonduff went five one up and missed two good goal chances. We were always second best, looked unbalanced and made numerous unforced errors as too many of our main players had an off day. For all that Clonduff were unable to put us away and at the break only two points separated the teams, 1:5 to 1:7. Despite Clonduff scoring a second goal in the fortieth minute and our inability to point from play the result was in doubt until moments from the finish when Clonduff swept up the field on a counter attack and goaled at the second attempt.

Seniors Shamrocks v An Riocht 08/08/2005

The Senior footballers lifted some of the gloom with a creditable win in Newry. In an entertaining match the play swung from end to end with some passages of top class football and the lead changed hands on several occasions with lots of goal mouth action. Aidan Flanagan was probably the pick of the full back line really attacking the ball while the corner men covered in behind; Conor Walsh did well on the half line with the McVeighs; and at midfield James Colgan played himself into the game after a difficult start, with James Cunningham doing well when introduced; up front Paddy Cole too improved as the game went on while Neill Dorans frees kept us in touch and Martin Clarkes running from deep caused Shamrocks lots of problems. There was not a lot of ball went to the front men but Richard Annett will be happy with his three point return. It was far from perfect but was a marked improvement on the weeks earlier offering.

Senior Castlewellan v An Riocht

An Riocht traveled to Castlewellan on Friday and were unlucky not to take something from the game. Kevin Flanagan was unfortunate not to be awarded a penalty early on when he was felled bearing down on goal before Stephen Poucher opened for Castlewellan with two pointed frees. On the quarter hour Neill Doran had a free for us but our passing in the forwards was over ambitious and lots of ball was intercepted by the home defence. Tony McAtamney’s fisted effort was the first score from play and Aidan Burns seized on a loose clearance for another. Just before the break Richard Annett scored a spectacular second for us to leave it four two.

On the restart Michael Harper forced a good save from the Town keeper before Paddy Cole left the minimum in it. Paul Hanna and Michael Harper exchanged scores as the pace picked up and frees from Neill Doran and Paddy Cole put us ahead for the first time. Hanna and Burns swung it back in Castlewellan’s favour before Neill Doran equalized again in the fifty first minute. Both teams had chances to win it in the nine scoreless minutes which followed before the experienced Martin McKibben edged Castlewellan ahead and with the last kick Hanna flattered them by doubling their lead, 0:9 to 0:7.

Action shots from An Riocht and Liatroim Senior Game May 2005

Senior Football An Riocht v Liatroim 25/07/2005

After some confusion over the day and venue this tournament game eventually took place in Glasdrumman on Tuesday and An Riocht came from behind to win by eight points 2:12 to 1:7.

Backed by the wind Liatroim dominated the early possession and Johnny McBurney saved well from JP Owens. PP McCartan was exerting a major influence and Liatroim went four points to one in front. Kevin Flanagan scored our opening point and Conor Sloan blocked a clearance but the ball was hacked off the line. Liam McVeigh soloed through but his shot was well saved. Just as we were getting back into it Liatroim seized on a poor clearance to goal and went on to add a point from McCartan. With the game slipping away wing backs Fergal Doyle and Joe McVeigh advanced for points apiece to set up a storming finish to the half. Conor Sloan converted a penalty after a foul on Marc Taylor and then Marc finished off a second goal after Conor and Liam combined and we went in two points ahead at the break.

Six unanswered points in the third quarter made it double scores, the pick a Joe McVeigh effort. Liatroim managed a brace themselves as we gave the ball away cheaply in the middle third but Kevin soloed in for a rousing score and Conor Walsh’s second from top of the left ended the scoring for the night.

Team: J McBurney M Trainor A Flanagan G Small J McVeigh 0:2 D O’Reilly F Doyle 0:1 P Murney L McVeigh R Annett 0:3 K Flanagan 0:3 Conor Walsh 0:2 M Taylor 1:0 S Flanagan C Sloan 1:1. Subs G Finnegan S Clarke N McArdle D Sherry S McArdle.

Senior Football An Riocht v Kilcoo 25/07/2005

In the Final of the Longstone Tournament An Riocht lost to Kilcoo 2:12 to 0:10. We started really well going five one up but during the same period we missed some match winning scores and at the top level you really need to take your opportunities when they present themselves. We were exposed too at the back by the slick moving Kilcoo attack whose quick transfer of the ball presented a greater test than this team had previously encountered, while in Liam McVeigh we had the most influential midfielder on the park.

Liam ran through the middle of the Kilcoo defence at will and a foul on him presented Richard Annett with a tap over free. Conor Sloan was unlucky moments later when he rescued a loose ball but the keeper, Stephen Kane, got down to save his hurried kick. Stephen Flanagan added our second and then there were goal mouth escapes at both ends. Conor Laverty sliced through to send a shot whizzing wide while a foul on Liam delivered a penalty which Kane saved at his right hand post. Kevin Flanagan sent over a side line kick before Kane again went full length to turn away Liam’s shot in our next attack.

A quarter hour in Noel Devlin opened for Kilcoo from a free but we replied with two like scores from Richard for five one. Noel Devlin and Kevin Morgan pointed for Kilcoo before Marc Taylor made it six three in the twenty fifth minute. Kilcoo leveled with a Noel Devlin goal after good play from Emmett Devlin and Kevin Morgan. Conor Walsh pointed an instant reply only for Noel Devlin to haul us back and before the break Gary McAvoy put Kilcoo ahead for the first time, 1:5 to 0:7.

We lost the game in the third quarter with Kilcoo scoring six successive points to go ahead by double scores. Corner forwards McAvoy and Devlin added a pair apiece while Marty McClean and Brian O’Hanlon also got forward to score. Noel McArdle came on to convert a long free but the next score fell to Kilcoo in the fiftieth minute with Laverty taking full advantage of a disputed line ball to hare away and find the net. Kevin Flanagan pointed a free while Donal Kane fisted a reply. Richard Annett took our tally of scored frees to seven and in the remaining ten minutes we had ample opportunity to bridge the gap but a combination of tenacious Kilcoo defending and our oh so slightly off target shooting meant it was not to be. All in all this was a worthwhile tournament during which eight debuts were made to the senior team and hopefully this will stand to the players in the future.

Senior Football An Riocht v Longstone 25/07/2005

This league encounter attracted a huge crowd to Dunavil and at the finish An Riocht were four points to the good.

Neill Doran set the scene for us with two excellent opening points from play and with barely five minutes on the clock Liam McVeigh advanced to shoot a goal, the keeper distracted by the presence of full forward Stephen Flanagan. As play swung end to end Steven Doran pulled a point back and Kieran Doran cannoned another shot off the bar. Richard Annett made it six one from an acute angle but Longstone were getting on top and pointed through Adrian Trainor, Conor Smith and Barry Doran for six four. We were making little of what chances we had with a succession of wides and feeble shots and from one such under hit effort Mark Doran went the whole length of the field to point. Paddy Cole replied with possibly the best score of the game which was followed by a frantic climax to the half with goals at either end. First Longstone midfielders Ambrose Rodgers and John Magee combined for the latter to fire a screamer to the top corner, then from the kick out Cole crossed for Stephen Flanagan to fist past Aidan Poland and send An Riocht in 2:4 to 1:5 ahead.

Eamon Trimble raced away to point for the visitors on the restart but two Neill Doran frees put a goal in it going into the final quarter. Steven Doran and sub John Trainor from a free brought it down to the minimum before An Riocht motored away in the final minutes. Cole, Doran with two frees and sub Kieran McVeigh put five between them with Ambrose Rogers now playing a target man adding a consolation deep into added time.

Johnny McBurney, Aidan Flanagan, Deaglan O’Reilly and Joe McVeigh had stormers in the winners defence while Liam McVeigh and Paul Murney complemented each other at midfield. Up front Neill Doran, Paddy Cole and Stephen Flanagan carried the main threat. For the losers, Longstone, Mark Doran, Barry Kelly and JP Logan were best at the back, Ambrose Rogers had his moments in midfield, while in attack Steven Doran and Kieran Doran were the most dangerous.

Senior Football An Riocht v Liatroim 21/07/2005

After some confusion over the day and venue this game eventually took place in Glasdrumman on Tuesday and An Riocht came from behind to win by eight points 2:12 to 1:7.

The Final v Kilcoo is in Longstone on Thursday 21st at 7:30pm.

Longstone Tournament 18/07/2005
In the Longstone Tournament on the twelfth night An Riocht beat Clonduff by five points, 2:11 to 0:12. Both teams were minus regulars due to holidays, Clonduff had eleven of the players who figured in their last league match and we had eight. Several minors were thrown in for the first time and coped well. Conor Walsh settled on the edge of the square and limited the dangerous John Fegan to three points from play; Fergal Doyle at half back proved a useful link to the attack; and Conor Sloan plundered 2:2 from top of the left. Of the others Johnny Mc Burney impressed between the posts; Neill Doran emphasized the importance of including a dependable place kicker; Liam McVeigh looked well able for centre field; and Stephen Flanagan kicked two memorable points from full forward.

After Neill Doran had opened the scoring with a long range effort, Conor Sloan won his own ball for the second then seized on a defensive error for our third. Clonduff hit back strongly and went four three ahead with two Fegan frees and points from play from Eugene Brannigan and Finbar Mc Conville.

Down the other end Stephen Flanagan pointed from distance and then Sloan got a touch on Doran’s cross for the opening goal. Flanagan added a point on the turn and when out in front proved difficult to dispossess. Eugene Brannigan weaved in for a reply but Liam McVeigh forced a good save at the expense of a point for An Riocht and before the break a Doran free and Kevin Flanagan from play put us 1:8 to 0:5 up.

Two Doran frees in the third quarter kept us ahead as Clonduff enjoyed their best spell in the match. Shane Ward, Fegan, Brannigan and McConville all made full use of time on the ball for points apiece and Johnny McBurney saved well from McConville before Fegan fisted over to leave a goal in it. McVeigh from play and Fegan from a free kept the result on a knife edge with McBurney denying first Peter Withnell then Ward but at the other end we were not as wasteful as Sloan followed in Paul Murney’s long punt to steer the ball low past the keeper for a clinching goal.

Seniors 18/07/2005

The Seniors lost in Rostrevor in the final league match before the holiday break. Dreadful shooting from play and placed balls kept the score down to four points to two at the break with An Riocht the worst culprits. It was the final quarter before Reds found their range with any consistency and ran in a late goal for a flattering ten point margin.

Senior Football Mayobridge v An Riocht 19/06/2005
The seniors recorded their first win of the season at this most difficult of venues on Thursday night. Fielding minus just the County seniors this was the strongest line up An Riocht put out this season and buoyed by an early Martin Clarke goal the team performed with increased confidence. Martins second goal before the break put us in a commanding position and in the second half we added some good points for a 2:13 to 0:5 success.

Senior Football Longstone v An Riocht  09/05/2005
The short journey to Longstone provided another disappointing defeat. It is hard to reconcile the early good form against Mayobridge and Liatroim with these latest two defeats against Rostrevor and Longstone.

Senior Football An Riocht v Rostrevor 02/05/2005
Four straight defeats going into the big local derby does not augur well. On Friday we were well beaten for the first time this season, by a Rostrevor team which was buoyed by an early goal and at times ran rings around us. The only positive from the match for us was that the team did not give up and finished strongly to put a slightly better look on the scoreboard.
