The realities of life in the second division
became very real when the Kingdom faced
Leitrim Seconds in their second game of
the division 2 series.
Played in appalling conditions (and with
the dreaded shortened pitch) An Riocht struggled
with the conditions from the outset. Leitrim
looked very young but egged on by a strong
management team they showed great tenacity
and effort which An Riocht struggled to
contend with. The injuries to key players
did not help and the loss of Niamh Mulhern
was a further blow to the visitors. Leitrim
rushed into an early lead with 2 points
in a row before Sophie Colgan replied through
a well executed free.
Leitrim continued to press and were rewarded
with two goals before half time to take
a commanding lead, one which they were never
to loose.
Half time Leitrim 2-02 (8) An Riocht 0-01
The second half started were the first
had ended and both teams slogged it out
in poor conditions. Leitrim recorded the
first point of the half followed by one
from Eilish Mulholland. However the Leitrim
team had their tails up and they scored
two more points to basically end the match
as a contest. An Riocht to their credit
pushed on with points from Sophie Colgan
and Laura Brennan before the home team steadied
their ship with a late goal. In the closing
stages Laura Brennan scored a goal for the
travelling team but it was really too little
to late and Leitrim coasted to a comfortable
and well deserved win.
An Riocht will want to forget this game
for one reason or another but can take heart
with great performances by Aine O Reilly,
Clara Killen and Ciara Cunningham in particular.
Ciara Trainor tried immensely hard and improves
as the weeks go on..
Full Time Leitrim 3-05 (14) An Riocht 1-04
(7).
