An Riocht continued their campaign with
an away match to Clonduff not knowing how
they would react following their superb
display against league stalwarts Ballycran.
Clonduff are undoubtedly the yardstick
this side of the water and those pundits
who forecast an easy game were again proved
wrong by a determined, disciplined and courageous
Clonduff outfit. From the outset An Riocht
quickly realised that they were in a match
of high intensity and it was left to the
inform Niamh Mulhern to register the first
two scores against the run of play followed
by a point from her county colleague Lisa
Hughes which gave the Kingdom team an early
lead, Niamh again stepped up to the mark
with a further well taken long distance
point before the new kid on the bloc for
An Riocht Jannie Magee registered a point
at full forward to leave the Kingdom with
a commanding lead.
This score did not really reflect the true
tempo of the game and deservedly Clonduff
smashed home a goal to reduce and marginalise
the score.
Laura Brennan responded for the away team
and the bubbly Niamh Mulhern registered
again with a point before half time to leave
the score
Clonduff 1-00 (3) An Riocht 0-07 (7)
The second half started at a dramatic pace
with Hilltown in the ascendancy. The An
Riocht midfield of Ciara Cunningham, Aishling
Clarke and Laura Brennan had to be at their
best to hold Clonduff while Louise Rodgers
and Joanna Sloan settled everything down
to repel the home team. Aine O Reilly was
superb particularly with her ground strokes
while Marie Trainor minimised the Clonduff
attack with some brilliant interceptions
and Clara Killen was tenacious and commanding
in everything that she did Despite the defensive
efforts of An Riocht a determined Clonduff
registered the first point of the second
half before the brilliant Coleen Fearon
took control as a make shift Centre half
to deliver a ball to Laura Brennan who rattled
it over the bar to settle things down for
An Riocht. The forwards for An Riocht started
to make headway with points from county
stars Niamh Mulhern and Lisa Hughes. Amazingly
goalkeeper Joanna Sloan registered a point
from a well taken free to ensure victory
for the away side. This left the impetus
very much with An Riocht and Niamh Mulhern
took a great long range point before the
tireless work rate of Jannie Magee brought
two goals in quick succession (one of them
in a Gooch Cooper football fashion) led
to a final score of
Clonduff 1-01 (4) An Riocht 2-12 (18)
The result was maybe a bit flattering to
An Riocht but still showed their strength
in depth against a strong Clonduff team
which to their credit never gave up trying
