An Riocht senior camogs recorded another
victory at Dunavil last night when they
overcame a very determined Clonduff II team.
From the off Clonduff showed great determination
and with the An Riocht girls seemingly very
nervous and slow to get started it looked
the more likely that Clonduff would score.
However, a great point from Sophie Colgan
helped to settle the nerves and she quickly
pointed from a free to leave the home side
two points ahead.. It was Clonduffs turn
to dig in and they responded with two great
points to level things. To An Riochts relief
Lisa Hughes then took command and in a great
movement from the back Laura Brennan found
Lisa Hughes with a superb ball which she
was happy to rattle to the net. Lisa Hughes
recorded another point and eventually Niamh
Mulhern recorded her first score to leave
matters at half time 1-05 (8) to 0-02 (2)
to An Riocht
The second half opened at a furious pace
with a point from Sophie Colgan followed
by a magnificent Clonduff point which could
easily have landed in the net. Niamh Mulhern
was coming more into the game and following
a burst of speed floated over a magnificent
point from over 30 yards. Sophie Colgan
added to the tally and there then came the
killer blow for the visitors when a hopeful
ball into the box was beautifully knocked
down by Laura Brennan for "Janie"
Magee to hammer a lovely ground ball to
the net. The game was effectively over as
a contest but Clonduff never gave up trying
and were rewarded with a goal of their own
to make it a nervous last 10 minutes for
An Riocht. However Lisa Hughes scored another
point and Niam Mulhern and Sophie Colgan
added to their tally for the night with
a point each. Clonduff registered a further
score of their own to leave the final total
An Riocht 2-11 (17) Clonduff II 1-04 (7)
All in all this was an enjoyable game played
in perfect conditions. Joanna Sloan was
again her cool self between the sticks while
Marie Trainor was outstanding at corner
back. Louise Rodgers and Coleen Fearon were
very steady and held the line very well.
Clara Killen was the last member of the
defence and worked tirelessly throughout
for the cause. At midfield Aine O Reilly
was inspirational while Ciara Cunningham
played a brillant captains role. County
star Laura Brennan showed exactly why she
is just that with a fantastic show of blocking
and distribution. Niamh Mulhern started
slowly but by half time had burst into life
with some fantastic scores to her credit.
Lisa Hughes looked glad to be back and worked
tirelessly at her game while the two front
runners of Sophie Colgan and "Janie"
Magee kepy constant pressure on the Clonduff
defence and were simply too hot to handle.
This victory keeps An Riocht well in the
running for the next 3 games which will
take them to the end of the first season
in the second division
