01/11/2009* There was
a good turn out for the first senior Camogie
practice on Sunday morning, keep up the
good work, and if you missed it join in
this week.
Senior Camogie
30/08/2009
Preseason training for the Senior
Camogs starts on Sunday 1st November.
Camogie 26/07/2009
After the epic proportions of the ’08
campaign this year’s Senior Camogie
ended with a whimper. The last match was
on 6th July and Ben Dearg’s failure
to fulfil Monday’s fixture effectively
brought the season to a close. Thanks
to those who assisted with or supported
the bag pack at ASDA.
Senior Camogie
v Ballela 12/07/2009
The Senior Camogs exited the championship
at the first hurdle on Monday in Ballela.
Senior Camogie
v Atticall 05/07/2009
The Senior camogs lost in Atticall but
by all accounts this was a much improved
performance from their first meeting in
which An Riocht seemed overawed. Ahead
for a good portion of the match An Riocht
didn’t get the rub of the green
and the more experienced home side closed
out a result. The curtain comes down on
this return season to Division Two at
home v Kilclief on Monday 27th July.
Senior Camogie
v Ballyholland 28/06/2009
An Riocht lost to Ballyholland
in Division Two by seven points 2-9 to
3-13. Over the hour Harps were the better
team but not seven points better. Both
keepers were in outstanding form and the
game was tied at two frees apiece before
Emma Jayne Magee struck for a close range
goal. Ten minutes later in the twentieth
minute Harps were level with two points
from play and a converted free. A long
range Naoimh Mulhern goal put An Riocht
back in front but a like score for the
visitors tied the match again. Laura Brennan
replied but Harps hit back to tie things
at the break, 1-6 apiece.
On the restart Ballyholland struck 2-1
before two points from Sophie Colgan got
An Riocht going again. Twice the keeper
came to Ballyhollands assistance and once
the ball cannoned back off the post as
An Riocht perhaps tried for goals too
early in the half. Balyholland having
survived the scare took control for a
time and stretched their tally to 3-12
while An Riocht were left with just two
Sophie Colgan frees making it 2-7 to 3-12.
Suddenly An Riocht injected some urgency
into their play, Maoimh Mulhern fired
over two points, one just skimming the
bar but again Harps defended well and
a few other An Riocht chances came to
nothing before referee Frank McDonald
brought proceedings to a close.
Senior Camogie v
Clonduff 21/06/2009
An Riocht senior camogs recorded another
victory at Dunavil on Monday when they
overcame a very determined Clonduff II
team. A great point from Sophie Colgan
helped to settle the home side and she
quickly pointed from a free to double
the advantage. Clonduff responded to level
things before Lisa Hughes rattled a goal
to the net. Lisa recorded another point
and Niaomh Mulhern recorded her first
score to leave it half time 1-05 to 0-02.
The second half opened at a furious pace
with a point from Sophie Colgan followed
by a magnificent Clonduff point. Niaomh
Mulhern was coming more into the game
and following a burst of speed floated
over a point from thirty yards. Sophie
Colgan added to the tally and there then
came the killer blow for the visitors
when a hopeful ball into the box was beautifully
knocked down by Laura Brennan for Janie
Magee to hammer a ground shot to the net.
The game was effectively over as a contest
but Clonduff never gave up trying and
were rewarded with a goal to make it a
nervous last few minutes for An Riocht.
However Lisa Hughes scored another point
and Niaomh Mulhern and Sophie Colgan added
to their tally for the night points apiece
to leave it An Riocht 2-11 Clonduff II
1-04 at the final whistle.
All in all this was an enjoyable game
played in perfect conditions. Joanna Sloan
was again her cool self between the sticks
while Marie Trainor was outstanding at
corner back. Louise Rodgers and Colleen
Fearon were very steady and held the line
very well. Clara Killen was the last member
of the defence and worked tirelessly throughout
for the cause. At midfield Aine O Reilly
was inspirational while Ciara Cunningham
played a brilliant captains role. County
star Laura Brennan showed exactly why
she is just that with a fantastic show
of blocking and distribution. Niaomh Mulhern
started slowly but by half time had burst
into life with some fantastic scores to
her credit. Lisa Hughes looked glad to
be back and worked tirelessly at her game
while the two front runners of Sophie
Colgan and Janie Magee kept constant pressure
on the Clonduff defence and were simply
too hot to handle. This victory keeps
An Riocht well in the running for the
next three games which will take them
to the end of their first season in the
second division Team An Riocht: Joanna
Sloan, Louise Rodgers, Aine O' Reilly,
Marie Trainor, Clara Killen, Ciara Trainor,
Laura Brennan, Niaomh Mulhern, Sophie
Colgan Colleen Fearon, Emma Jane Magee,
Lisa Hughes. Subs Ciara Trainor, Ruth
Colgan, Ella Colgan , Orla Cunningham,
Emily Keenan, Nicole Kelly Maria Higgins,
Sarah Jane Harper

Senior Camogie
v Ballycran 16/06/2009
At last, after two walk-overs, An Riocht
got the chance to win points on the pitch
with the visit of Ballycran to Dunavil
and they certainly took it with a hard
fought victory by 3-7 to 1-10.
Sophie Colgan was in
great form taking a Naoimh Mulhern pass
to crash in an opening goal and soon added
her second after a high catch, turn and
shot. Naoimh Mulhern sped in for a third
goal and then fired over a long range
point. Ballycran hit back with a couple
of points but were denied goals by resolute
defensive play from Joanna Sloan and Louise
Rodgers. At the other end points from
Emma Jayne Magee and Laura Brennan put
ten between the teams. The visitors then
enjoyed a great spell just before the
break pointing six times before Laura
Brennan replied to leave it 3-4 to 0-8
at the break.
The Ards girls finally
got the goal they had been after shortly
into the second half and added a point
to leave the minimum between the teams.
Now An Riocht showed great heart and rallied
to point through Lisa Hughes, Sophie Colgan
and Naoimh Mulhern. Try as they might
to come again Ballycran managed only a
further point as An Riocht held on for
a merited win. Team J Sloan, M Trainor,
L Rodgers, C Killen, A Clarke, C Fearon,
A O’Reilly, C Cunningham, EJ Magee,
L Brennan, N Mulhern, S Colgan. Subs L
Hughes, N Kelly.

Senior Camogie 31/05/2009
The games v Ballela and v Liatroim did
not take place as neither could not field
a team. An Riochts last game was on 18th
May.
Senior Camogie
v Ben Dearg 24/05/2009
An Riocht got back to winning ways on
the lough shore winning 1-15 to 3-6. Ben
Dearg registered three points without
reply before the An Riocht forwards sprang
into life and points from Lisa Hughes
(3) and Niamh Mulhern (1) steadied the
ship. However Ben Dearg responded with
a goal and a point and An Riocht seemed
in panic mode save for the sparkling form
of Lisa Hughes with another two points
from play, then two more points from Sophie
Colgan and Niamh Mulhern to leave them
trailing by only two points at the interval,
Ben Dearg 2-5 An Riocht 0-.9.
An Riocht dictated play in the second
half with Joanna Sloan, Marie Trainor
and Louise Rodgers steady at the back
and Coleen Fearon exceptional at half
back. Three points from Sophie Colgan
and one from Niamh Mulhern were met with
a determined response by Ben Dearg who
scored a goal and a point to give them
a slight advantage. An Riocht were not
going to give this one up however and
two further points by Sophie Colgan and
one from Niamh Mulhern followed by an
Emma Jane Magee goal meant there was no
way back for the home team. An Riocht:
Joanna Sloan, Louise Rodgers, Aine O'

Senior Camogie
v Atticall 17/05/2009
The Senior camogs lost to a good Atticall
side at Dunavil on Monday of last week.
An Riocht had their moments but were always
chasing the result and Atticall had the
experience and skill to secure the result.
Senior Camogie
v Ballyholland 17/05/2009
Then on Wednesday the Senior camogs lost
to the Harps in Ballyholland. This was
a game An Riocht deserved something from
but again inexperience probably cost them
the result. Still in a week which provided
a steep learning curve for them, An Riocht
now know just what is required to play
at this level.

Senior
Camogie Ballycran v An Riocht 27/04/2009
An Riocht Senior Camogie team’s
campaign in the Second Division continued
with a journey to the Ards to meet last
years League Champions Ballycran. Many
wondered how much the defeat to Liatroim
would affect their performance but no-one
was to be disappointed at the sheer skill
shown by both teams in what proved to
be a magnificent contest.
Many
say that camogie is in decline but the
sheer effort, courage and commitment shown
by both teams was a sight to behold. The
game was played in ideal conditions and
the excellent manicured playing facilities
in Ballycran lent themselves to the spectacle.
An Riocht from the start looked determined
to make up for their huge disappointment
at the previous weeks result and took
an early lead with a point from Lisa Hughes.
This was quickly matched by a Ballycran
score and as the teams and spectators
tried to come to terms with the pace of
the game Lisa Hughes was again on hand
to pick up a beautifully judged ball from
goalkeeper Joanna Sloan and send the ball
past the helpless Ballycran number one.
This shocked the Ballycran girls into
action and two points followed from them
in quick succession with young Johnston
causing problems for the An Riocht defence.
However with Aishling Clarke raising her
game An Riocht started to come to terms
with the pace of the match and again Lisa
Hughes sent over a point. Ballycran responded
similarly but the game exploded into life
with Laura Brennan at midfield and Ciara
Cunningham marshalling the troops and
freeing up the speedy Niamh Mulhern to
take a fantastic score following a scintillating
run.
Ciara
Cunningham followed this with another
point before colleges’ All-Star
Coleen Fearon who was a tower of strength
around the middle scored a brilliant point.
The Kingdom it has to be said were totally
in command at this stage and growing quickly
in confidence. Niamh Mulhern took another
fantastic point followed by a brilliant
Laura Brennan goal and point. The half-time
whistle could not come soon enough for
Ballycran with the score at Ballycran
0-04 An Riocht 3-06
The
second half started at the same pace as
the first half had ended and An Riocht
proceeded to play the best camogie of
their careers and certainly resembling
last years Dunloy glory trail. However
Ballycran are not league champions for
nothing and the Kingdom girls faced an
early battering of the defence. Joanna
Sloan again proved how cool she is under
pressure in goals ably supported by Louise
Rodgers who was magnificent at full back
and fully deserving of “The Rock”
tag which she earned for herself last
year. Aine O Reilly had returned to her
more familiar wingback position and her
grit and determination were magnificent.
She really is going from strength to strength
and is one to watch for the future. Clara
Killen had dropped back from midfield
to take up another of the wing back berths
and was in tremendous form breaking down
attack after attack from Ballycran. Marie
Trainor also slotted into the defence
and had a magnificent game following an
early injured which would have sidelined
most. Colleen Fearon also dropped into
the backline and it was clear to see why
she is a most talked about talent. Her
breaks forward and sweeper role at the
back were inspirational. However inexperience
at this level began to tell and Ballycran
rowed in with a goal and a point before
“Janie” Magee who had replaced
Sophie Colgan steadied the nerves with
another goal for the Kingdom. County starts
Lisa Hughes scored a further point followed
by two from Niamh Mulhern who was in excellent
form.
The
Ballycran girls showed how good they were
with four unanswered points to leave the
final score An Riocht 4-09 Ballycran 1-09
The
Kingdom it has to be said were thoroughly
deserving of this victory against a superbly
trained and marshalled Ballycran side
and they should now be able to settle
into their league surroundings and manage
to give a good account of themselves

In their first game since promotion
An Riocht withstood a strong Ballela rally
to win 5-4 to 2-4. An Riocht got off to
a flying start with points from Sophie
Colgan (2) and Niaomh Mulhern before Lisa
Hughes fired in a goal from close range.
Ballela replied with the first of two
first half frees but the home side hit
back with a cracking long range point
from Niaomh Mulhern added to by goals
from Niaomh Mulhern and Sophie Colgan
for a 3-4 to 0-2 interval lead. Ballela
introduced some subs at the break and
began to carry the ball at An Riocht resulting
in 2-1 scored in the first eight minutes
of the half. However galvanized by a superb
Joanna Sloan save An Riocht broke out
for a brilliant Laura Brennan solo goal
quickly added to by Naoimh Mulherns second
goal leaving Ballela’s fourth free
a mere consolation score. Team: Joanna
Sloan, Nicole Kelly, Louise Rodgers, Clara

All players places have
now been allocated and all supporters,
friends and members are welcome to come,
there are twenty places left on a first
come basis. It should be a wonderful working
weekend to set us up for the new season
and an excellent , relaxing break even
for those not participating.
We are delighted that
the local club Leitrim Gaels has given
us full use of their facilities and that
the Leitrim County team Football Manager
John Morrison has agreed to take one of
the sessions on the Saturday. John is
an extremely well known figure in coaching
circles from within the GAA and it is
incredibly generous of him to take time
out of his hectic schedule to devote to
us, all the more humbling give the fact
that he has a senior game the next day
against Carlow in Carrick- on –
Shannon
The week end is made
all the more exciting in that the Cavan
Club Crosserlough have agreed to accommodate
us on the way home by playing a friendly
match. Crosserlough are the team that
beat Dunloy in the Ulster Club Championship
last year and they narrowly lost out to
Slaughniel in the final. It should be
a great test for the girls!
There will certainly
be an Antrim influence at this years dinner
dance as it has been confirmed that All
Star Jane Adams is to attend senior team
Manager Sean Caughey is also originally
from Belfast and in fact ate many a carry
out from Jane’s “Mannys Chip
shop “on the Antrim Road.
Ironically enough it
has also been ascertained that Sean’s
mother was born in the Dunloy parish-
a secret that he very much kept hidden
during last years battles! Jane has probably
been the finest camogie player in Ireland
last year and it is fantastic that she
will be with us. The willingness of the
Executive Committee to recognise our achievements
last year should be appreciated by all
who take anything to do with camogie in
the club and we should be grateful to
them for that support. For those of us
who do not know of Jane - She plays for
Rossa, Antrim and Ulster and 2008 was
a major year for her. This should be a
very special night for us all
The first meeting of
the new Camogie sub-committee took place
last week and it was great to see a 100%
turnout. The meeting itself got through
a lot of routine items and Managers were
appointed for the incoming year. Full
details will be announced shortly. An
introduction to the strategic plan was
given and it is hoped that this work will
begin at the next meeting to be held on
Wednesday 4th February 2009. It is great
to see this sub committee giving of its
time to help all our camogie teams improve,
strengthen and progress. Thanks everyone.
A timetable of training
for the Camogie senior team has been finalised
by the senior team management and will
be discussed at the Leitrim conference.

Celebrity Bainisteoir
Cunninghams Cailini 3-09 Coles
Crazies 3-09
It reminded me very much of the Wild West
in America when old gunfighters came out
to test themselves against the young upstarts
and present day stars. The boxer dreams
to have “one last fight” and
so it was with many of the camogs -it
doubt drove some of the more seasoned
campaigners to take up the caman one more
time. The huge crowd of supporters waited
with baited breath (and checked their
loved ones insurance!) to see what format
would be chosen by the Cunningham &
Cole as they locked horns for the first
time. It is strongly rumoured that such
was his desire to win Don Cole had visited
the home of one Bonny McGreevy to get
a few tips for the big day. It was heard
that the best tip Bonny gave was “not
to turn up”. “Rocky”
the referee was somewhat underwhelmed
by the whole occasion and was seen talking
to one of the Camogie mentors to clarify
the rules. He said he had not a clue about
refereeing – it was later clarified
that he was talking about camogie only.
There was a gasp from the crowd as the
two teams took the field as it became
apparent that there was a distinct possibility
that the field could quickly be transferred
into a field hospital. Mary Allen was
finding it difficult to carry her first
aid kit under the weight of inhalers and
Michelle Fitzpatrick was really quite
worried that she might not have enough
Embassy Regal to keep her going to the
end of the match.( As it turned out she
ran out of cigarettes before half time.
The match started at a ferocious pace
(it didn’t really but it sounds
good!) with Paula Fearon showing that
she had not lost her undoubted skill (she
had just misplaced it!) and she linked
well with Deirdre Rodgers in attack. Well
I say linked well – they were able
to help each other up and helped with
breathing actions following a two yard
run! .Michelle Fitzpatrick started well
and was not short of issuing instructions
to all and sundry which frightened a few
of the younger ones in the crowd (like
Jim Allen and Noel Fearon). Patricia Clarke
lined out at half forward where she struggled
for the first few minutes but was able
to settle into the game when she found
out that she shouldn’t try to run
so far or so fast! Christina Donnelly
also made a welcome return and showed
why she was a very competent and able
camog in her time. However age creeps
up with us all and to be honest milk would
have turned quicker! There were some promising
performances by Nicola Sloan, Ruth Colgan
and Patricia Og Clarke and maybe they
will feature in the real action in 2009.
The game was extremely enjoyable to watch
and it was really neck and neck up to
the final few moments. Temperatures were
raised along the line and referee Rocky
had to settle things down a couple of
times with the bainisteoirs and in fact
put them back beyond the line. Drama ensued
right to the very end when Angela “the
cat” ( she is rumoured to be called
the “Cat” after the famous
Chelsea soccer goalie Peter Bonetti or
because she might have been as good as
some of the Kilkenny hurlers- but in fact
it is just because she is cat!) Mulhern
was pulled down in the square for a penalty.
She decided to take the free herself and
the crowd were left in suspense as it
took her several moments to prepare for
the free by taking her jacket off, brushing
her hair and doing her nails. It was worth
the wait however as she smashed the ball
past the helpless keeper to end the game
in a draw. Managers often say “a
draw was a fair result” but not
in this case for it is rumoured that referee
O Rourke cannot eat the amount of meat
coming from Cunningham since then!
Thanks to all who took
part (also to our Attical neighbours who
attended – I hope you enjoyed it
and thanks for your support) and hopefully
it can be repeated for good causes in
the future
Just for a bit of fun now!

Jane Adams –Guest Speaker @ An
Riocht Annual Awards Dinner & Dance
Jane Adams has confirmed that she will
attend the An Riocht Annual Awards Dinner
Dance on Saturday 28 February 2009.
Jane Adams is the most famous
Ulster Camogie player of her time. She
plays for Rossa, Antrim and Ulster and
2008 was a major year for her.
Jane led a young Antrim side to the Division
Three league title back in April, then
was awarded an All Star, the first Antrim
and Ulster player ever to receive the
award. Next she captained her club O’Donovan
Rossa to Antrim & Ulster Championships
and finally assisted her Club to lift
the All Ireland Championship in Croke
Park scoring an amazing 2 goals 9 points
in the final. She was named Antrim Player
of the year as O’Donovan Rossa became
the first Antrim club to win the All Ireland
Senior Championship.
Jane Adams is, at present, the instantly
recognisable face of Ulster Camogie. Well
before 2008, however, the west Belfast
businesswoman had established herself
among the greats of the game in the province.
Jane was the cutting edge of every team
she played on through Rossa, UUJ, Antrim
and Ulster. Every defender dreads marking
her, every opposing team has to devise
a game plan to counteract her influence.
Those within the sport have always respected
her talent. Jane has brought her chosen
sport beyond the column inches devoted
to Gaelic Games and grabbed the attention
of people who know little about camogie.
Never before has a camogie player been
asked to switch on Christmas lights!
She is an undoubted inspiration to anyone
wanting to play camogie and given our
clubs successful year (Junior League &
Championship double) her presence is fitting
recognition for our own girls.

An Riocht Camogs
lose second replay 28/10/2008
The second replay of the Ulster
Junior Camogie Championship between An
Riocht and Dunloy took place at Saint
Pauls pitch on the Shaws Road in Belfast
on Sunday. In real wintery conditions
An Riocht led 1-3 to 1-0 at half time
but struggled into the wind falling short
1-4 to 3-3. A disappointing finish to
a glorious unbeaten run of games which
delivered Down League and Championship
titles. Now the emphasis switches to the
Minor League and Championship Finals and
the U16 League Final.

An Riocht and
Dunloy draw again 20/10/2008

An Riocht Camogie Team
It was a privilege to
watch the Ulster Junior Camogie Championship
replay at Dunavil on Sunday between An
Riocht and Dunloy. Never before at Dunavil
has there been a display of such courage
as from the Junior Camogs who twice fought
back from seemingly impossible positions
to force first extra time then a second
replay.
Some of us will remember
the titanic struggles between Meath and
Dublin in the Leinster Championship a
number of years ago. Well look no further
than this years Ulster Camogie Championship
where Down Champions An Riocht have locked
horns with their counterparts Dunloy of
Antrim on two consecutive Sundays and
on both occasions a draw has been the
result with even extra time unable to
separate them.
But what a feast of camogie
the supporters from both camps have enjoyed
as they all look forward to a mouth-watering
third go next weekend at a neutral venue
(probably Belfast).
The conditions while
windy were excellent for camogie with
An Riocht coming out of the traps determined
to make up for last week when they lost
a seven points lead to Dunloy which led
to the replay. The ever dependable Laura
Brennan was first of the mark as she rattled
home a magnificent goal followed in quick
succession by a glorious point.
Dunloy had obviously
done their homework on An Riochts version
of Sean Cavanagh, the in form Sophie Colgan
but it was a case of here we go again
as she notched up three consecutive points
to put the home team into a comfortable
lead.
The visitors however
are not Antrim champions for nothing and
they settled into a pattern of play which
the An Riocht midfield and half-back line
found difficult to contain scoring two
goals and two points without reply. An
Riocht fought back hard and a Lisa Hughes
goal steadied matters and Sophie Colgan
again popped up before half-time with
another point to leave the half times
score An Riocht 2-5 Dunloy 2-2.
On the restart the effervescent
Lisa Hughes took control for An Riocht
and floated over a lovely point but this
was the beginning of the storm for the
home side as Dunloy in typical fashion
began to apply pressure and An Riocht
was under siege from here on in. Four
points from Dunloy through their big guns
of McNeill and Quinn took them ahead for
the first time and an uncharacteristic
collapse by the young An Riocht side looked
ominous. How often however have we seen
character in this team and against the
run of play Niamh Mulhern was in the right
place at the right time to drive the ball
to the net and restore the lead for An
Riocht. A lack of concentration almost
proved fatal however as Dunloy moved straight
up the field to drive the ball past the
helpless Joanna Sloan.
The last ten minutes
had everyone in the ground on the edge
of their seats and the crowd could not
believe it when young Coleen Fearon picked
up the ball and drove a fantastic ball
to the top right hand corner of the net
with Niamh Mulhern following up with a
point. The home side was well placed to
advance in the competition when a final
free from Dunloy levelled the fulltime
score at An Riocht 4-06 to Dunloy 3-09
Unlike last week the
referee had been instructed to play ten
minutes each way extra time and An Riocht
had little difficulty in responding. However
Dunloy must have regretted not getting
their extra time last week as they came
out with all guns blazing to totally dominate
the first half of extra time running up
a score of 1-3 to a solitary score from
Niamh Mulhern for the An Riocht side and
but for some stalwart defending by Joanna
Sloan and Louise Rodgers this match would
have been finished. Time and again the
Dunloy attack was allowed to stream forward
in packs only to be denied by the heroism
of Rodgers and Sloan. Half time came with
Dunloy ahead 4-12 to An Riochts 4-07.
An Riocht took to the
field for the second half determined to
make amends for their disastrous first
half and playing with a wind they upped
their performance. Ciara Trainor and Aine
O Reilly were starting to come to terms
again with their forwards while the stature
and courage of young substitute Ella Colgan
making her championship debut helped shore
up the defence while Colleen Fearon and
Marie Trainor were a constant thorn to
the Dunloy forwards.
Scores were at a premium
and in a last ditch attempt to pull something
out of the bag management returned brave
young Nicole Kelly, who had pulled up
as a result of a hamstring injury, to
the fray as a forward. With less than
a minute of normal time left she got the
ball and was brought down close to goal.
Sophie Colgan lofted a high ball to the
net to reduce the deficit to two points.
In a magical finish An Riocht were awarded
another free and last weeks finale was
repeated in reverse when again Sophie
Colgan fired the ball to the net.
In the dying throes of
the game and from Dunloys puck out they
were rewarded with a free which was sent
over the bar to level the match. Final
Score (after extra time) An Riocht 6-07
Dunloy 4-13
This game was probably
one of the best Camogie games ever seen
at Dunavil and this is fast becoming an
excellent An Riocht team albeit that it
lacks experience. The midfield of Clara
Killen, Ciara Cunningham and Aishling
Clarke did tremendous work against a strong
Dunloy middle while Nicole Kelly was superb
in defence before her unfortunate injury.
Orla Cunningham on her debut did nothing
wrong and will continue to fight for her
place while Christina Trainor showed great
promise when she came on also to make
her debut. The experience at this level
is wonderful for this bunch of girls and
should stand them in good stead for the
future

Dunloy Camogie Team
An Riocht draw
with Dunloy 13/10/2008
In the Ulster Junior Camogie Championship
An Riocht made the long journey to Dunloy
emerging against the odds with a 2-9 apiece
draw. If you need a lesson in belief,
courage and confidence you could do worse
than to travel to the An Riocht ground
next Saturday to watch the replay of this
first round Ulster Club Championship match.
An Riocht had been given
absolutely no chance of progressing in
this inaugural competition. How wrong
can you be sometimes because from the
start the An Riocht took the game by the
scruff of the neck and put the competition
favourites firmly on the back foot firstly
from a point by Sophie Colgan followed
by one from Laura Brennan. In true Dunloy
spirit they hurled like favourites and
an attack against the run of play seen
the home side capitalise on a rare mistake
in the An Riocht defence and fire a shot
to the net. Again full forward Sophie
Colgan came to the rescue with another
point to level things.
An Riocht began to take
control of the game with Sophie again
pointing followed by a point from the
hardworking Naoimh Mulhern. The home team
recorded two further points before halftime
but were shocked when Sophie Colgan rifled
the ball to the net followed by a point
from Lisa Hughes to leave the halftime
score 1-06 to 1-02 to An Riocht.
An Riocht faced a fairly
strong breeze in the second half and faced
the wrath of a wounded Dunloy team but
undeterred it was left to Sophie Colgan
to again find the net with a superb goal
followed by a point from Laura Brennan.
The match was firmly in An Riochts control
but lack of experience at this level was
starting to show and a very solid Dunloy
team started the comeback. Time and time
again the An Riocht keeper Joanna Sloan
was called upon to save the day and time
and again she did just that with an absolutely
sterling performance between the posts.
Further points came from Sophie Colgan
and Lisa Hughes but with ten minutes to
go Dunloy rallied and scored five frees
without reply.
In a heart-stopping finale
seven minutes added time was played and
a free was awarded to Dunloy which the
An Riocht defence was unable to handle
resulting in a deflection going past the
An Riocht keeper which she could not do
anything about for the equalising goal,
2-9 to 2-9. The final whistle sounded
immediately to bring about a replay in
An Riocht next Saturday. Team: Joanna
Sloan, Ciara Trainor, Louise Rodgers,
Aine O’ Reilly, Marie Trainor, Coleen
Fearon, Nicole Kelly, Clara Killen, Ciara
Cunningham (Captain), Laura Brennan (0-02),
Lisa Hughes (0-02) Naoimh Mulhern (0-01)
Aishling Clarke, Sophie Colgan (2-04)
Sarah Jane Harper. Subs: Orla Cunningham,
Christina Trainor, Ella Colgan, Emily
Keenan.
Thanks to all the Ulster
champion players of 1980 & 1981 who
attended the teams final training session
on Saturday morning and to those who prepared
the breakfast on Sunday at Dunavil and
to all the supporters who made the long
journey to Dunloy.
06/10/2008 An
Riocht, the journey continues –
Ulster Junior Camogie Championship v Dunloy
on Sunday 12th October at 2pm in Dunloy.
Mention Antrim County
hurlers like Alastair Elliott, Liam Richmond
and Gregory O Kane and the name Dunloy
springs automatically to mind. This hurling
and camogie parish plays host to the first
round of the inaugural junior Ulster Club
Junior Camogie Championship when the current
Antrim League and Championship winners
Dunloy take on the Down Junior League
and Championship winners An Riocht.
What a match we have
in store with both clubs steeped in Camogie
history. In 1980 and 1981 An Riocht were
crowned Ulster Senior Camogie Club Champions
with Dunloy having won a similar number
of titles.
An Riocht have made remarkable
progress this year having won the championship
at the fourth time of asking and winning
the league for the first time in nearly
twenty years.
This is a very young
team with a very bright future and having
assured themselves of intermediate status
next year enter the game full of ambition
and confidence. It is remarkable to think
that the average age of the team is 18
with 10 of the panel having been on or
are currently on the various Down county
panels. This is testimony to the work
put in at juvenile level and the rewards
are starting to show with the club in
two minor finals and having just captured
the U14 league title.
The team started training
last November and it is remarkable to
think that they have scored a total of
30 goals 94 points (184 points) in this
remarkable season and only lost one match
in the whole campaign having been beaten
by their Ards rivals Ballygalget the night
after the Ulster final when 5 of the An
Riocht team had represented Down against
Antrim at Casement Park.
An Riocht did not get
it all there own way in the championship
beating Darragh Cross, a very strong Ballygalget
team and overcoming their neighbours Longstone
in one of the most competitive junior
finals in many years. This battle will
stand them in good stead against Dunloy
and the experience which the girls will
gain from this latest adventure will be
a welcome bonus.
Dunloy are seen as overwhelming favourites
by many and can call on a vastly experienced
panel of players and management. They
two have won the league in some style
and demolished Gort na Mona in the Antrim
final 6-15 to 1-0. They had several stars
in the team most noticeably full forward
Claire Dixon (3-3) and midfielder Ciara
McNeill (1-7). Corner forward Chloe Quinn
also rowed in with 1-2.
However now it is all
on the day and while this panel do not
underestimate the mountain they have to
climb they relish the thought of pitching
themselves against one of the strongest
teams in the competition.
Manager Sean Caughey is very upbeat about
the game.” It should be a fantastic
game to watch and I only hope for the
girls sake that they can give a maximum
performance on the day- if they do that
then we are very much in with a shout.
These girls have worked their socks off
all year and it is a fitting tribute to
them that they have the opportunity to
represent their club and their County
in this inaugural competition and no doubt
it will bring back fond memories for the
girls of 80/81 who did the club proud
and who undoubtedly laid the foundation
for these girls to now again ignite a
dream of Ulster success.”
“Dunloy look very
strong with some remarkable players such
as Dixon and McNeill but then again we
have a few of our own” he continued.”
Sophie Colgan at full forward is our highest
scorer this year with 8 goals and 31 points
(55) while Laura Brennan and Niamh Mulhern
have scored 8 goals and 25 points (49)
and 7 goals and 27 points (48) respectively.
An amazing return given that they are
all still minors. I have no doubt that
we will give it our all and it is in the
lap of the Gods after that”
It promises to be a great adventure for
the An Riocht team and their supporters
and an amazing match in store for any
neutrals.

Cunningham & Clara Killen accept a

v Dunloy
Pen Pics
Goalkeeper - Joanna Sloan
A marvellous season for Joanna so far
following a very nasty injury. A very
safe steady goalkeeper who was inspirational
in the championship final. It is hard
to see Dunloy putting many goals past
her. Conuty experience and honours will
mean she will not at all be unnerved by
the occasion
Right corner back - Ciara Trainor
One of the finds of the season Ciara has
made this position her own and improves
with every game. Many thought her season
would have been over following a serious
car accident. The tenacity with which
she resumed her training duties is also
very evident in her game and her tireless
work is exemplary. Her mother Maura was
a member of the 80 & 81 Ulster Championship
winning teams.
Full back - Louise Rodgers.
Louise is the lynchpin of the defence
and is never found wanting in that position.
She quietly gets on with the job and is
a magnificent reader of the game. Claire
Dixon the Dunloy full forward will know
she has been in a game. Cork hurlers have
the “Rock” O’ Sullivan
– An Riocht has Louise Rodgers.
Left Corner back - Aine O Reilly
Following a spell abroad Aine quickly
settled back into the panel and has been
a great addition to the team. She is strong
and assured and again has a lot of county
experience. She appeared as a substitute
in the championship final against Longstone
and snuffed out one or two threats from
the beaten finalists.
Right half back - Nicole Kelly
Nicole has been a revelation this season
and promises to be a major player in the
camogie scene over the next few years.
For one so young she is courageous, agile
and possesses skills way beyond her years.
Many players a lot her senior have tried
to no avail to intimidate her and put
her off her game but she has never failed
to deliver above average performances
all season.
Centre half back - Coleen Fearon
There is no doubt that Coleen is another
major star for the future. She possesses
absolute skill and works tirelessly for
the team. Her blocking at times is incredible
and again as one so young she often “receives”
attention from more senior opponents but
on every occasion has risen to the challenge.
She is calm under pressure and will no
doubt be a major influence on this game
Left half back - Marie Trainor
Small in stature but remarkably big in
heart. She had a magnificent championship
final against much bigger opponents and
has made this position her own. She has
All Ireland experience and brings a lot
of mobility to what is recognised as one
of the best halfback lines in the county
Midfield - Ciara Cunningham ( Captain)
The heart of the engine room Ciara has
achieved much this season having to adapt
to a new role as captain and midfield.
Her inspirational performances and leadership
has cemented together a very strongly
bonded team and she is delighted to at
last get the cups and medals which had
eluded her in previous years on previous
teams. She has grown in confidence in
every game and do not expect anything
less than a captains performance from
her on Sunday
Midfield - Clara Killen
A quiet unassuming player but a terrier
on the field. She is exceptional at ground
camogie and her tackling and tenacity
is the main reason why the forwards get
such good supply of the ball. Her teamwork
with Ciara Cunningham and Ashling Clarke
leaves the midfield a stronghold which
is hard to breach. She will not be overwhelmed
by the big stage. Expect great things
from her.
Right half forward - Laura Brennan
8 goals and 25 points says it all about
this young girl, or maybe not. When you
add natural defensive skills, speed and
a frightening will to win you get nearer
the truth. Another county player she has
performed at all levels. While having
a disappointing game by her own standard
in the County final she has been inspirational
all season and is certainly All Star material,
again another one with great potential
and a great future.
Centre Half Forward - Lisa Hughes.
It is a pity that Lisa (like Aine, she
spent Spring in Australia) was not with
this panel from the start of the season.
She is revered within the club along the
same lines as footballer Martin Clarke
due to her past exploits. A remarkable
and composed player she has added a wealth
of talent and experience to the An Riocht
attack. She is a great player who will
continue to grow within this team.
Left Half Forward - Naoimh Mulhern
7 goals and 27 points to her credit Naoimh
is probably the fastest forward on the
team. Her speed of turn has left many
defenders in her wake all season and she
relishes the big stage. She has scored
some remarkable goals for club and county
including a cracker against Longstone
in the championship final. If An Riocht
are to stand any chance Naoimh and indeed
the whole half forward line will have
to show that massive scoring potential
which we have come to expect from them
Right Full forward – Sarah Jane
Harper
Young Sarah Jane has trained consistently
all year and basically just loves her
camogie. She filled in for Joanna Sloan
in goals earlier in the season (when Joanna
was in Australia) and deservedly makes
her championship debut given her commitment.
Again, a very fast player who will grasp
her chance with both hands.
Full Forward – Sophie Colgan
The teams top scorer with 8 goals and
31 points (55) she will be heavily relied
on to give a big performance following
her boast on camera following the Championship
final victory when she stated very categorically
that she was a better player than her
brother (county football star) James.
Kerry had Kevin Donaghy, Kilkenny had
Henry Sheflin and An Riocht have Sophie
Colgan. She has been amazing this season
and works incredibly hard to improve her
game. Exceptional free taker.
Left corner forward - Aishling Clarke
Aishling plays as a third midfielder and
has put in some sterling performances
this year. She is quick to the tackle
and has a remarkable ground stroke. She
will battle to the end and is a key player
in the midfield engine room. Her mother
Patricia is Chair of the camogie club
and also played in the 80/81 team
Subs
Orla Cunningham - Orla is sister of captain
Ciara Cunningham and has worked hard at
her game all year. Will undoubtedly secure
a regular place on the team over the next
few years
Emily Keenan - again a totally dedicated
camogie player and very much part of the
team. She has made great progress this
year and should be a valued player for
many years to come
Christina Trainor- sister of Marie Trainor
she is near to breaking into the side.
A very skilful player with a very bright
future
Ella Colgan- one of the youngest members
of the panel and sister of Sophie Colgan.
She has trained very hard this year and
is near to starting. She is a totally
committed player with bags of skill

Junior Camogie 28/06/2008
An Riocht beat Ballygalget in
the Junior Camogie Championship at Dunavil
on Wednesday past. Sophie Colgan sent
over an early free to settle the side
and Laura Brennan had a shot for a goal
saved before Naoimh Mulhern added a second
point. Laura chipped in with a third score
and then as the second quarter started
Colleen Fearon soloed in for two in a
row.
Ballygalgets chances were few and far
between as they struggled to get through
the An Riocht centre where Ciara Cunningham,
Clara Killen and Ashling Clarke were almost
impassible and on the rare occasion they
got a shot off Joanna Sloan was sound
in the home goals. Naoimh Mulhern was
causing the visitors all sorts of problems
with some strong play on the ball and
Laura benefited with two more points.
Then just before the break Colleen broke
through and shot to the net to leave An
Riocht 1-7 to nil ahead.
The first score of the second half was
going to be vital and the hard working
Sophie Colgan claimed it when she bagged
a goal within seconds of the restart.
It took Ballygalget some time to recover
and ten minutes in they goaled. However
any hopes of a comeback were quickly snuffed
out with Ciara Trainor, Louise Rodgers
and Marie Trainor snapping into tackles
to clear their lines and Nicole Kelly
added an An Riocht point at the other
end. There was still time for Sophie to
nick her second and An Riochts third goal
as the home girls reversed the league
result to progress to the semi final.

Junior Camogie Longstone v An
Riocht 02/06/2008
An Riocht bounced back from the disappointment
of losing in Ballygalget to beat Longstone
2-8 to 0-6 on Sunday morning. Laura Brennan
settled the nerves with an early goal
and though Longstone hit back with a couple
of points, further scores from Sophie
Colgan (4) helped An Riocht to a 1-6 to
0-3 interval lead. Longstone put on the
pressure on the restart scoring twice
before a Niaomh Mulhern goal re-established
An Riochts superiority and Laura Donnelly
capped her sides scoring with a tremendous
late point. Longstone were not finished
however and forced good saves from Sarah
Jane Harper in the An Riocht goals and
some good defensive play from Clara Killen
and Marie Trainor.
*Mayobridge were unable to field in Wednesdays
match.

An Riocht defeated Longstone on Sunday
morning in the Junior league.
Junior Camogie Ballygalget v
An Riocht 12/05/2008
What a difference a week makes.
An Riocht Junior camogs made the long
journey to the Ards to play an unbeaten
and very experienced Ballygalget team.
The match got off to a great start for
the visitors with a goal after only two
minutes. Afterwards, how ever it was all
Ballygalget with the An Riocht defense
under constant attack by the home side.
Totally on top in many positions throughout
the park An Riocht had no answer to the
enthusiastic and confident Ballygalget
team. The An Riocht side went in very
dejected at half time trailing by 3-3
to 1-4.
The second half started with a spirited
performance by An Riocht and a number
of scores reduced the deficit to a couple
of points. However Ballygalget raised
their game and some basic errors by An
Riocht led to a quick flurry of goals
which effectively killed the game, Ballygalget
winning 5-6 to An Riocht 1-8. Although
they tried to the end it was not to be
An Riocht’s night and they headed
home a very disappointed side.
There were few players who played with
any distinction on the night and it is
hoped that the team will now realise the
massive task lying ahead of them and refocus
their efforts at training and on the pitch.
Many of the girls had too many commitments
at county level and beyond and this undoubtedly
showed on the pitch with normally majestic
players contributing very little and looking
tired and sluggish
The fate of this team is still very much
in their own hands and it will be interesting
to see if this game becomes a watershed
in the season for them. Team: Sarah Jane
Harper, Marie Trainor, Louise Rodgers,
Emily Keenan, Coleen Fearon, Aishling
Clarke, Ciara Cunningham, Clara Killen,

Ulster Camogie Feile 06/05/2008
In Tyrone on Saturday An Riocht
beat Portaferry by seven goals but lost
to Antrim and Derry opposition. Still
it was good experience for the girls and
showed them just how much further they
must progress to compete with the best.
Feile 28/04/2008
The Ulster Camogie Feile is on
Saturday in County Tyrone. An Riocht play
their group games in Gortin against Ballycran,
Ballinascreen (Derry) and Loughgiel (Antrim);
then head for Carrickmore for the parade
and hopefully onto Eglish for the Finals.
Junior Camogie An Riocht v Kilcoo
28/04/2008
An Riocht Junior Camogie team
continued their good start to the season
with a victory over Kilcoo in the Division
Three League at Dunavil. The final score
might flatter to deceive as Kilcoo with
a lot of experience in their side opened
up the better team in the first ten minutes
and it has to be said that there were
worried faces on the An Riocht sideline.
However a first point from Laura Brennan
seemed to settle the home side and they
were able to build on this score to take
control of the game. Laura was to end
up with a final tally of 1-5. Niamh Mulhern
was again prominent in attack and scored
three points in quick succession to extend
the Kingdom lead, another promising county
minor she was to end up with 1-8.
The prominence and determination of the
other two forwards Sophie Colgan and Orla
Cunningham was worthy of mention the former
recording two scores from frees and the
latter registering a score from the full
forward position.
The midfield of An Riocht showed great
determination and provided a springboard
for the forward line. Unexpectedly, Ciara
Cunningham while being her usual inspiration
as captain, scored 1-1 and it is great
to see her game developing with every
outing. She was ably assisted by Aishling
Clarke whose ground work was a joy to
behold, one sideline puck was majestic
and would have done Sean Og O Halpin proud.
She is certainly a major prospect for
the future at this rate of going. The
absence of Clara Killen was a blow to
the side but a masterly tactic by management
seen the introduction of Louise Rodgers
to the midfield and she was inspirational
in her defensive play and her attitude
and commitment frustrated the Kilcoo team
on many occasions.
Kilcoo did have their moments and when
on attack looked menacing. They were unlucky
on a number of occasions not to register
a score. However they found it extremely
difficult when passing midfield they were
met by a resolute An Riocht defence. Ella
Colgan stepped into the senior team and
produced a performance which belied her
years, Ciara Trainor was an inspiration
at corner back- she has definitely made
this position her own, while Marie Trainor
continued to deal with any threat which
presented itself on her wing.
When this resolute defence was breached
the Kilcoo side faced Colleen Fearon at
full back and Sarah Jane Harper in goal
who continued to snuff out any threat
presented by Kilcoo.
Yet again we see Sarah Jane Harper keep
a clean sheet and bring off some brilliant
saves and the magnificent Colleen Fearon
who was asked to move from the half back
to the full back line turning in a flawless
performance.
The game ended with a favourable result
for An Riocht who can look to the next
match with a certain degree of optimism.
The introduction of Laura Donnelly and
Emily Keenan demonstrated the wealth of
talent available to this junior panel
and this augurs well for the future. Team:
Sarah Jane Harper, Ciara Trainor, Colleen
Fearon, Marie Trainor, Ella Colgan, Aishling

Junior Camogie An Riocht v Newry
22/04/2008
An Riocht proved too strong for
visiting Newry.4-6 to 1-1 last Wednesday
night. After the debacle the night before
over the Mayobridge fixture which did
not take place the girls were in no mood
for compromise. Within two minutes of
the start of the match Niaomh Mulhern
took a point for An Riocht which should
have settled the nerves. However an attack
by Shamrocks against the run of play resulted
in a freak goal when a child run across
the goal line unsettling the defense and
allowing the simplest of tap ins by Shamrocks.
This seemed to shock the home team into
action and the ever reliable and steady
Captain Ciara Cunningham led by example
and took hold at midfield flanked brilliantly
by Clara Killen and Aishling Clarke This
midfield trio are growing in stature with
every game and will certainly be a force
to be reckoned with before the end of
the season. Time after time they broke
down the Shamrocks march forward and Sophie
Colgan at centre half forward was winning
much of the possession from these breaks
and launching attack after attack for
the Kingdom. Sophie Colgan seems to have
blossomed into a very good senior player
and is a focal point in her new position
in the forward line. It was only a matter
of time until an attack produced results,
a long ball in saw Orla Cunningham at
full forward pulling on the ground for
a goal for An Riocht. The young minor
was a constant thorn in the side of the
Shamrocks defense and her effort and willingness
to learn will benefit the senior side
as the season progresses. A point followed
from a free by Sophie Colgan followed
quickly by a goal from Laura Brennan and
a final point of the half came from Niaomh
Mulhern. The two county minor stars, Brennan
and Mulhern, have slotted naturally to
spearhead a very potent An Riocht attack
and between them were to score all of
the home sides scores with the exception
of 1-01. Half time then came and An Riocht
had a comfortable lead 2-3 to 1-0.
Shamrocks came out for the start of the
second half with all guns blazing and
for the first ten minutes threw everything
at the An Riocht defence where Marie Trainor,
Ciara Trainor and Louise Rodgers did sterling
work in keeping the visitors at bay and
down to a single point. A number of wides
followed and credit is to be given to
young Sarah Jane Harper in the An Riocht
goal for her intelligent puck outs and
indeed a number of crucial saves.
Laura Brennan replied for the home team
with a point and in the space of two minutes
the game was virtually over when first
Niaomh Mulhern and then Laura Brennan
got a goal apiece. The manner in which
the goals were scored was extremely impressive
and came from the magnificent delivery
from the back in the form of Colleen Fearon.
This young girl is a real class act and
definitely gave a player of the match
performance. Two final points came first
from Laura Brennan and then from Niaomh
Mulhern to wrap the game up for the home
team.
Team: Sarah Jane Harper, Marie Trainor,
Louise Rodgers, Colleen Fearon, Emily
Keenan, Ciara Cunningham, Clara Killen,
Sophie Colgan (0-1), Orla Cunningham (1-0)
Ashling Clarke, Niaomh Mulhern (1-3),
Laura Brennan (2-2), Ciara Trainor, Michelle
Horner, Ella Colgan, Laura Donnelly.
Thanks to St. Louis for use of their
pitch.
Junior Camogie St. Johns v An
Riocht 07/04/2008
Last Monday night saw An Riocht
Juniors heading to St Johns Drumnaquoile
for a challenge match.
The match began at a frantic pace with
An Riocht racing into an early five point
lead with scores from Laura Brennan, Naoimh
Mulhern and Sophie Colgan. St Johns who
play a league above An Riocht were full
of running, skill and experience but found
it difficilut to settle given the determination
and hard work of the Kilkeel girls. The
graft and determination of Ciara Cunningham
(Captain) and Clara Killen resulted in
constant supply of the ball to the forward
line of Orla Cunningham, Niaomh Mulhern,
Sophie Colgan and Aishling Clarke.
Further goals and points from Mulhern,
Brennan, Colgan and Clarke left St Johns
badly in need of a few settling scores
the first of which came fifteen minutes
after the throw in which was testimony
to the work of Ciara Cunningham and Clara
Killen at midfield and equally the tenacious
defense of Marie Trainor, Louise Rodgers
and Emily Keenan who stood up extremely
well to the expected St Johns onslaught
when it eventually arrived. Worthy of
special note in the back line was Down
Minor Colleen Fearon who time and again
belied her young years by playing like
and experienced Senior. The introduction
of Ciara Trainor further strengthened
the defense and her tenacity is a quality
from which An Riocht will benefit this
season
However when it comes to daunting tasks
it is amazing to think that the teams
youngest member Sarah Jane Harper took
on the most senior of responsibilities
by going between the posts and bringing
off numerous point blank saves. The half
time score of 4-3 to 2-1 was testimony
to how well An Riocht had played in the
first half but they knew they would have
to be at their best to keep an excellent
St Johns team at bay in the second half.
And so it was with wave and wave of St
Johns attacks being broken up by Marie
Trainor who excelled at corner back and
superb marshalling of the small square
by Louise Rodgers kept scores to a minimum.
Sarah Jane Harper brought of a number
of goal line saves to the delight of the
traveling fans. Ashling Clarke who by
now had been switched to a midfield role
grew in stature as the game progressed
and made many timely blocks and tackles
which augur well for her future contribution
to the team in the new season.
A further goal and point from St Johns
proved to be a cause of concern to the
An Riocht Management but the switching
of Clara Killen to defensive midfield
ensured that the constant flow of St Johns
attacks was halted enabling captain Ciara
Cunningham and Ashling Clarke to take
control again and feed the forwards who
added a further four points to their tally
before games end. Michelle Horner replaced
the hard working Orla Cunningham towards
the finish and seemed to enjoy the run
out in the forward line.
The final whistle was warmly greeted
by the An Riocht contingent who had finally
stepped up to the mark and got a result
against an extremely physical, determined
and skilled St Johns side who on many
previous occasions had always got the
better of them. All the more creditworthy
as four stalwarts of the team –
Joanna Sloan, Lisa Hughes, Aine O’Reilly
and Kelly Mc Veigh – are currently
holidaying in Australia.
The first match of the new league season
will take place on Wednesday 9 April away
to Mayobridge. The management of An Riocht
would like to thank Michelle Fitzpatrick
for refereeing the match at very short
notice and also to St Johns for playing
the game at such short notice. Best wishes
to both of them are extended for the incoming
season Team: Sarah Jane Harper, Marie
Trainor, Louise Rodgers, Colleen Fearon,
Emily Keenan, Ciara Cunningham, Clara
Killen, Sophie Colgan, Orla Cunningham

LAURA BRENNAN SCORER OF
THREE GOALS IN ACTION FROM AN RIOCHT V
GORT NA MONA CAMOGIE CHALLENGE.

* The Junior camogs played their first
game of the season on Sunday, a hugely
entertaining affair with Gort Na Mona
from Antrim which the visitors just edged
4-7 to 4-4. First half points from Naoimh
Mulhern (2), Sophie Colgan (30) and Laura
Brennan were added to by a Laura Brennan
goal after Naoimh Mulherns shot had rebounded
off an upright. At the break the teams
were level 1-4 apiece. The Antrim girls
netted early into the restart but a double
strike from Laura Brennan completed her
hat trick and put An Riocht in front for
the first time. Gort Na Mona rallied however
and struck 2-3 in a row to take command
of the match. Showing some great fight
the An Riocht girls refused to accept
defeat and eventually broke out of defence
for Sophie Colgan to place Naoimh Mulhern
for a super goal. Time however had run
out and the recovery could not be completed
before the final whistle sounded. Team

In the Championship semi final
at Newry on Thursday An Riocht beat the
locals 2-2 to 2-0. Newry scored first
and indeed it took An Riocht until the
final minute of the half to draw level,
Louise Rodgers ground strike beating the
Newry keeper. It was all An Riocht on
the restart but Newry defended well and
the next score would not come. Then against
the run of play Newry struck their second
goal ten minutes into the half. This score
seemed to waken An Riocht to the real
possibility of defeat and we played a
lot more direct with long pucks forward
in the final quarter hour. From one such
effort Emma Jayne Magee saw her shot fly
all the way to the net and the teams were
level. The winning scores came within
a minute as Niamh Mulhern swung over two
points from top of the right and despite
a late scare a deserved victory was assured.
Ciara Cunningham was the star of the defence
with Clara Killen and Asling Clarke also
prominent. Further afield our play was
patchy against much bigger, stronger opponents
but Michelle Horner, Laura Brennan and
Niamh Mulhern battled gamely. Team: S

In the Championship Final we lost

well with a Laura Brennan point followed
by a Michelle Fitzpatrick goal but Darragh
hit back with two quick goals to take
the lead. Michelle Fitzpatrick pointed
to narrow the deficit to the minimum but
Darragh struck for another goal. Just
before the break Laura Brennan pointed
a free to leave us trailing 1:3 to 3:0
at half time. Two goals from Lisa Hughes
after great pieces of skilful play put
us in front on the restart. Darragh replied
with a point and the game could have gone
either way. It was Darragh got the vital
next score a well taken goal to lead by
two. We had chances to at least level
the match but just could not get the breakthrough
and the game finished with Darragh making
a vital goal line clearance to win the
match. Hard luck and well done to all

by 4:2 to 3:0. Possibly the win was sacrificed
to give as many players as possible part
of the game, which in itself is not a
bad thing. Scorers were Lisa Hughes (2)
and Eilish Mulholland.

Junior Camogie
v Mayobridge 08/05/2006
An Riocht lost our first league match
to Mayobridge, the County Champions, by
1:2 to 0:4, Lisa Hughes scored all our
four points. It was an undeserved result
for An Riocht played really well in a
good game and created enough chances to
win but too many times the ball flew just
the wrong side of the posts when goals
seemed more likely. Still despite the
defeat it was a promising start against
one of the strongest teams in this division.
Tonight (Wednesday) we visit Warrenpoint.
U12/U10 practice is
on Tuesdays from 6pm. John Crossey continues
to help and this is much appreciated.
U14 practice takes place at Dunavil on
Thursday from 5:30pm. U16 practice is
on Mondays at Dunavil from 6pm. All membership
should be paid by now. Sticks and helmets
are available from the Club at reduced
prices only until the stock is gone. Everyone
playing Camogie needs to have their own
helmet and stick. You cannot take part
in practice or games without both a stick
and a helmet. Only sticks broken at Club
practice or Club game will be replaced.

players are encouraged to come along and
help John. This is an ideal opportunity
for everyone involved with any Camogie
team to pick up tips, see new drills,
etc. It’s also a chance not to be missed
by anyone thinking of giving a hand. After
the practice John will take names for
a basic ‘Foundation Level’ coaching course
to be held at Dunavil soon and for any
parent or family member of a young player
who may want to help, this is the first
and necessary step. All Junior membership
should be paid by now. Sticks and helmets
are now available from the Club at reduced
